Edited by: Zartanic on 21/11/2009 04:08:35 In games like WOW I hated voice comms as it lead to players relying on being told what to do and general distraction from leaders who loved to micro manage along with the idiots who would do a running commentary. I noticed situational awareness simply did not exist when voice was used. Having no voice was never an issue as macros were easily set up and players had to know what to do and use their initiative. So voice was only used for social reasons.
In EVE its totally different. There are no macros or FC marking and target calling is fast so it has to be spoken. I also notice EVE players know when to shut up which eliminates a lot of the issues I had in other games. Also EVE has a lot of downtime so chatting is important to kill the boredom and wake players up fast when needed.
So give it a try and you will find its second nature after a while. You do not have to speak anyway unless you have a lead role.

Essentially it's hearing people's voices instead of reading their text. People talking instead of writing. When they write, they don't creep you out, but when they talk, they creep you out. No point missed.
No, I don't like "reading their text" either :) I prefer real life interaction, you know, talking and socializing with people in real life rather than typing, texting, emailing, or talking over voice comms in this game. I am a casual player and will get on voice comms when it is needed for gangs but I am not really so starved for social interaction as to spend hours socializing over TS/Vent like some do. The fact that some players spend their evenings through talking to random people over internet does creep me out. It is like they are trying to form some sort of social bonds that they are missing in real life.
And what's more, they expect me to do the same thing. When you refuse they make comments telling you that you must be un-social. Then I cannot help myself but think "yeah right dude I am not the one spending all weekends on Vent" but I usually just make polite excuses. These people don't get it that I am not playing this game to enrich my social interaction and form e-relationships like they do it.
However you put it, every time I bump into this it is quite creepy. But if you are one of these players, you won't get it once again

I dont like the idea of babbling while on my pc too.
Always hated this for a couple of reasons. I almost always play at night and screaming on my mic is not something my neibhours appreciate. The other thing is that when i have relatively good english i have really bad pronunciation (probably because i really rarely have to speak it), the last thing is that its really separate from the game thing and the game is losing immersion for me when i hear player voices (even more when some sexy female avatar speaks with a deep rough male voice) .
Unfortunately i was about to join 0.0 alliance twice and this is what didn't allowed me. The guys just didn't wanted someone without mic even if i am 32 mil sp capital pilot.
So recently i bought one and like it or not I'm going to use it.

Voice chat sucks in Eve cos the game is full of people who don't know how to use a microphone properly: the heavy breather, the reverb guy, the 5 AU-from-the-mic guy, the too-close-to-the-mic guy. And the non-native speakers that try their best but always needs to repeat themselves five times for their simple "BRB, need to pee" message to be understood.
Then there's players like me that are deaf or hard of hearing. All of the above things conspire against us to make participating in voice chat very tiring (it takes a lot of energy to decipher what people are saying when you don't have optimal hearing conditions).
Sure would be nice if people used quality microphones and had proper training but that's not the universe in which we fly. I am NOT an alt! |

Non-native? To what? An Icelandic produced game with servers that (iirc) aren't hosted in the US. Vent doesn't have a nationality either. ---------

"non-native" when speaking of language typically refers to anyone that does not speak that particular language as their first. I am not a native German speaker, just as a German would (most likely) not be a native English speaker, regardless of our particular prowess in said non-native languages. To refer to someone as a non-native speaker is not perjorative, nor does it have anything to do with nationality or physical location.

Originally by: Shuddayomoufa No, that's a bit different. Usually on the phone you either know the person and you already have an accurate expectation, or you don't and you have no preconceived expectation at all. But I can see the same feeling on the phone when, for example, you talk to a long lost aunt or pen pal. You have an expectation, and the reality is usually a lot different. Sig, I'm not attacking anyone. On the contrary, I want to get over my issue.
Ah, yeah I guess I have had that from people who I have never heard their voice but have talked to in chat or w/e over the internet for years. Well the longer you put it off the worse it gets. It's just a hurdle to realize that not everyone has a voice for raido... but some people do.
When accepting new members, my corp mates and I will not have more than a few lines of typed chat, move it straight to voice coms and you never have that awkward blockade.

Edited by: Night Epoch on 21/11/2009 20:59:11 Voice comms are utterly essential in PVP.
If you fly in PVP fleets without speaking directly with your FC, please inform me of your location so that I may come and decimate you with my far better organized and responsive fleet.
It's all about perspective, see. I also own a 360 and play Call of Duty with 13 year olds whose vocabulary consists of variations on the word "F@g".
Framed in that context, Ventrillo with my EVE alliance mates seems like a Quantum Chromodynamics discussion group over tea.
And if you're FC'ing a fleet and you have a whining blabber mouth, man up and tell him to STFU or GTFO and kick his ass from fleet and mute him from vent.

No I just mean that if a corp has mostly American players that speak English but also has a member from Spain whose first language is Spanish (not English) the Spanish person may have trouble being understood due to accent.
Likewise if a primarily Spanish corp has someone from France the French player could have troubles. I kept "non-native" generic since Eve is a global game! :)

This!
And hearing yourself through the re-verb of someones speakers... distracting, gets worse with voice activation.
Also that annoying high-pitched voice socializing noob telling you about how is cruise ROKH is awesome that just doesn't shut up, and then gets insulted when you tell him to shut up so people can actually use the channel for comms, and talks back and keeps on talking. F**K! (Happened to me, I didn't have admin/mod on the voice server. )

I have a strong Scottish accent and hate using teamspeak. When people can actually understand a word I say, they inevitably start making jokes about kilts and stuff, that's when the red mist descends on meh

LMAO.. I hate phones, but I dont have a problem with voice coms in game, for some odd reason. Guess I'm just strange that way.
to the OP.. if I hadn't started using voice comms, I wouldn't be in corp with my current ceo, because in text format he comes across MUCH more abrasive than he really is. He's still abrasive, but through the ability to TALK to him I've gotten a better handle in his personality, and I now know better what I can ignore or what he intends as a joke. Absolutely everything is subjective. |

Fair enough Thank you for the clarification. The initial example of non-native followed by an English phrase is what confused me as to your intent. Cheers. ---------

Once in awhile I'll bribe my little sister to speak on ts for me. So funny listening to grown men lol at taking orders from and being cussed out by a little girl. On the subject of socializing I hate people because they are either too similar to me, diminishing my individuality, or too different from me, deviating from the perfection that is me. http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1213058 Hi-sec R&D corp boosting is open for business! |

Edited by: Shanter on 22/11/2009 08:37:51 When I first started using Vent I felt really stupid. I got over it pretty quick. I'm really social by nature, and love to make small talk with people of different ages and nationalities. It gives me an opportunity to practice my German. I also like how easy it is to disengage from Vent, especially if people are obnoxious, or I'm feeling anti-social. All you have to do is flip channels. Can't do that so easily IRL.
Still, though, I feel awkward when other people in my house can see or hear me talking to the computer, especially if they don't use VoIP. I almost never use voice when I play PS3 or 360; that's a completely different atmosphere.
