Are there any tips to exploring to find unusual places or items in a solar system?
I read that people use the scanner to locate curiosities, but I have had no luck.
The only thing I know to do is scan with range set as high as possible (I usually type 1 and lots of zeros to get the highest number). And then I kind of peer at the scan list until my eyes glaze over.
So far, I have not found anything. Are there some steps I can follow to be more successful (actually, even a little successful would be nice). :)
Thank you!

It's probably not the best method, but I usually pick a system that I can normally survive in based on the ship I'm flying (0.5 if in a frigate, 0.2 if in a cruiser) and warp to every planet and scan for 10-15 mil km by range. Usually that's wide enough to cover all the moons orbiting the planet, and if there's any hidden pirate base, it will show up. Generally the pirates around such a place are of the same difficulty as the rest of the system, which is why I pick the sec status with care.
Interestingly enough, I think CCP added a lot of these; I've found various clouds, abandoned stations, and pirate infestations in almost every system I looked at.

Edited by: Luna Sky on 08/11/2004 07:07:01 Thank you for the link to the guide, Ebedar. And Mynobe: I tried exactly what you suggested and found a floating corpse near an ice planet. Ewwwwwwwwwwww!
Well, I wanted to find something and ... well ... I did! :) So I bookmarked my discovery and will fly back there anytime I feel like a snow cone :O
Thank you again for the replies :)
EDIT: The two systems I have fully explored are Kisogo and Sobaseki. The only two things I found were floating corpses :O One in one system around a planet and another in the other system around the star. Am I missing a lot in these two systems? :)

Welcome to eve, by the way.
There are several things you can do exploring-wise, but pirate logs are pretty handy for giving you places to go.
Sometimes agent missions (kill missions especially) will have the target destination near some eye-candy (stalagmatic asteroids, massive space junk, hidden asteroid belts, ancient decrepid spaceship parts, derelict stations, you get the idea)
There usually isn't anything you can interact with there, however. There will be some new content added in Exodus, so learning to scan may be helpful.
They are adding complexes (dungeons), which are expected to keep explorers busy.

Well, Kisogo being a system with a school, security 1.0, lots of police protecting the newbies... you won't find any pirate infestation bases there.
You need to look at 0.8 and below... switch your map to color stars by sec status in the map settings panel.
