I thought I'd give Ubuntu another shot. I had eve working before when I was using the 32-bit version but now with 64-bit, all I get is the splash screen. I've read that it takes a couple tries to get it working but it never does.
Any help is appreciated.

you need to change bitscancelled to =0 instead of =1 in your perf.ini
you also have to change it everytime you load the game because it gets reset each time you run the game, there is no workaround at this point other than editting the perfs everytime, or making some script to change it for you every time you start eve ---------------------------------------- ohai! :D |

sed -i -e '/bitsCancelled/ s/1/0/' prefs.ini

You will not have prefs.ini until you run the game imo. But without prefs.ini you can't run the game. Circle with no end... I have very same issue on 9.10 + wine 1.1.33. There is guide how to do it but it counts with having game already ran. I'm reverting back to 9.04 tonight because this is the single thing which doesn't run for me on 9.10...

wtf are you talking about regarding pref.ini?
1st thing, use a RECENT version of Wine (1.1.33 is the latest, 1.1.29 definitely works) not something from 2 years ago
search the forums also, for some people using Ubuntu, Eve appears to be temperamental and requires several attempts to start + various tweaks and tricks

EDIT Now it only works 10% of the time, it freezes after selecting a character
STOP using wine 1.0.1. Use wine 1.1.27 through 1.1.33 and it will work.
While you're at it, report the version of your graphics drivers and the configuration you applied to eve (during character screen) and wine (winecfg and user.reg).

There's actually a package in the Ubuntu repository for Wine 1.1.31. (It's marked wine1.2). Try that.
Of course, I'm having no luck with it as yet, but haven't spent much time tinkering.

Edited by: Eireen Harvenheit on 24/11/2009 22:19:06 Ubuntu 9.04 (kernel 2.6.28-11-generic) + Wine 1.1.33 works flawlessly for me (twice loaded character with no problems whatsoever). Remember you have to do
cp /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/* ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts/
to get EULA to show up.
Using nVidia 190.42 drivers causes no problems either.
