Could anyone give me some advice on the most effective way to find targets by combat scan probe?

You do realise that it's a fair bit too general of a question to ask?

I notice a few people do the four probes on one plane thing. Is it really as effective as having one for hight (ie a pyramid formation rather then a square)? Adjusting that one seems to consume the most time for me. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

You get higher signal strength with a pyramid, but I find it a huge PITA.
Suggestion: use diamond (4 on same plane pointing at target). It's fast and simple. If you ever have a tough target you can't get to 100% then switch to pyramid (I just launch another probe) when you are already as close as you can get.

I tested the pyramid and got no higher signal strength. The diamond/square is just as good in my experience.

I'm familiar with the standard 4 probe method, I was just curious to see if I was missing something when I was looking for targets when pvping/pirating. From those of you who gave relevant responses thank you. It appears their is not much I can do other than practice. I believe all my relevant skills are trained up enough (level 3's and 4's.)

I usually have 7 probes out at any one time. One probe on each area of interest. (Often isn't required for small system) When a probe gets a hit I keep it where it is, then move 4 probes around it in the diamond formation. I can usually find a ship in a very short period of time doing this. Becomes far more difficult the busier local becomes though.
The remaining 2 probes that arent currently being used to scan for this one ship I leave in areas of interest. Your ship may move before you can get a drop on them or another target may arrive. Either way the other two probes help speed up relocating targets that are on the move or finding new targets.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies. Much better you than I.
