Hi, I'm thinking of giving FW a go to learn more gang/fleet pvp, and generally have some fun. So I have a few questions.
1) Is FW alive and well? (How much action currently?). 2) Which faction is best to fight with? (Could be very subjective, but what I mean is which side is easiest to get a fleet and join a fight, for instance). 3) Is it easy for a non-corp player to get in to, or is it better to try and join an FW corp?
I'm sure these questions have been asked many times, but I'm struggling to find adequate answers, so please forgive me for asking. Really all i want is to be able to jump in a fleet and get a fight fairly regularly - not bothered which side wins most etc.
Thanks in advance for helpful answers! |

1) Yes FW is very much alive and well. WOLFY have over 1000 kills so far this month. 2) Any of the factions will give you pretty much instant action. Obviously I am biased towards Gallente but I imagine even the caldari have fun every now and again. 3) A player corp is always going to be better than general militia as you will get used to flying with your corp mates and will have organised ops and events. But corps don't suit everyone and there is alot to be said for the casual player sticking with the general militia, I guess it depends on your ambitions and goals within FW. |

I heartily second the suggestion to join an FW corp. My experience of the FCs in the general militia was that they were reluctant to invite anyone they hadn't already flown with extensively; conversely, most pilots were reluctant to fly with a new or unknown FC. So, yes, join an FW corp. |

1) It's very much alive and well, good fun too. Lots of active targets because a few corps have moved back in. And there are always pirates to shoot in any case.
2) You could hop on the Gallentte blob wagon but why would you want to do that? They are much more fun to shoot.
3) It's relatively easy. There is always the fear of spies though. Go for a corp would be my suggestion, but if that isnt your thing it only takes a bit longer to build up trust. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

1) I can place my ideas in clearly marked numerical order as well. Good thing I only have one thought. 2) Oh wait lol 3) It takes three to prove my point.

As far as the Gallente/Caldari war is concerned, Black Rise and Placid are extremely hot right now, compared to 2-3 months ago. Occasionaly Caldari heads down to Amarr/Minmatar lowsec to help stir up trouble, and occasionally the Amarr/Minmatar come up here to do the same.
A lot of it has to do with several corps and smaller alliances settling in temporarily before testing out what Dominion has to offer.
In terms of "how much action" it's escalated to the point where capitals are deployed semi-regularly for both sides of all four factions, as well as for strong PVP pirate corps in both respective lowsec areas.
And every faction has a seesaw effect: One faction might dominate the large fleet fights for several months, then something happens, attendance drops off, a major corp might leave, or a major pvp corp joining your rival faction (like Nibbletek and WOLFY and 8th Order joining/rejoining almost simultaneously) can tip the balance of manpower almost overnight. Post-BoB war we had Reikokku show up as flashy orange on our overview for about 2 months when they were in Minmatar. You never really know.
Depending on the type of fleet, newer players tend to suffer in that they have to go through some tough measures to prove themselves sometimes, and get whatever fleet it was they wanted to get into. Not everyone gets in every fleet, every time, and some people wind up walking away from FW in disgust after NEVER getting in a fleet. Brace yourself and try to keep a stiff upper lip about it. And try to get in the more casual, stress-free roams
But yes, it's alive and well. CCP's recent fix to the desynch lag has helped tremendously. We can have fights with 100+ at least once a week now.
And every now and then you'll have a nice Taff or Kamela fight, involving half a thousand players....mmmm....../drools... \o |

How would somebody go about finding a FW player corp to join? Where do they advertise?
Also, is FW open to people of all SP levels? Or are FW player corps only looking for (say) folks who can fly battleships well?

General FW is open to all SP pretty much as long as you can point something. Some corps are looking for high SP players but most are just looking for fun or competent players.
You could try looking on the public militia forums for corps to join but Im not sure how you'd find 'em really, there was sticky in the recruitment before. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

Best advice is to join the NPC militia Corp and start getting into fleets as you can. Any FW player corp worth it's salt will not bring in an "unknown". It's too easy for alt spies to join the militia themselves and infiltrate fleets. So, join the NPC militia corp of your choice, and get out there into fleets as able and make yourself "known". You'll also get to see what corps are active and what they're players are like (not just skill, but "personality" as well). Most corps who play for "fun" are looking for trustworthy players more so than uber-leet 50mil+ SP characters - though, having a few of them in your Corp sure doesn't hurt :P. This will also allow you to make a more informed decision on which player corp to strive for joining. |

WHat type of ships normally get fielded in FW?
Or is it that all types of ships get used.
Im training for a Manticore, and wondering where i can get some pvp practice of some form.

All kinds. Primarily BC and below, heavy on the T1/T2 frigs and cruisers, with a healthy dose of BS as well as the occasional carrier thrown in for some extra spice :). |

In terms of getting lots of cheap pvp experience in things like dogfighting, which ship will beat what in a straight-up fight, etc, Red Vs. Blue is probably a better choice.
For intermediate stuff like fleet setups, your role in a bigger fleet, Remote Rep, ECM and ECCM, blah blah blah, then FW is probably a good next step, without overwhelming you with EVERYthing at once.
Beyond that, the full mechanics of 0.0 (anything and everything, no kid gloves, no gateguns, no sec hits, bombs/bubbles/EVERYthing) would be the next step.
