Quote: "Low-sec (or Lo-Sec, short for Low-Security Systems) are systems with a security rating of 0.4 or less. Since CONCORD does not intervene in these systems, players can shoot other players without the danger of losing their ship to CONCORD, however in all low-security systems except for 0.0, a security penalty is incurred on the player that kills another player.
Ok, I'm having some difficulty understanding the lo-sec concept. Everything I've read, and I mean everything I've read says basically what is quoted. And in no way have the numerous source stated "...but, you can be killed by security forces IF...".
So, I was hanging out at a gate in a 0.24 security system. Someone comes through, I target them, I attack them, I click OK on the message that came up which I didn't read as to not lose the advantage......and I'm in my pod.
What gives? How is it I've been killed at gate camps in lo-sec but, when I try it, well, I'm just a pod floating in a vast and dangerous ocean?

Because concord and sentry guns are not the same thing. When you were killed at a gate, the attacker had setup a tank agains the sentry guns. You will need to do the same.

Really?
I mean, really?
Ok.
The sentry guns at gates and stations are the only security in losec. Usually at a losec gate camp someone has aggro from the guns (and can tank it) - that would be my guess.
Link "Sectors have different security ratings. While those with high security rating are swarming with patrol craft, those with zero security rating are rarely visited by empire authority. Sectors with low security include sectors of limited strategic importance, newly discovered sectors and sectors which act as "buffers" between empires. These sectors are often claimed by corporations who govern the sector as they see fit. Empire controlled sectors with low security rating will rely on sentry guns to uphold minimum law and order and these will destroy anyone who attacks other pilots or the sentry guns themselves."

it's simple;
if you shoot someone in low-sec who is either a) not an outlaw, b) not already agressed to you, or c) not at war with you, you will acquire GCC, this means that gate guns/station sentrys WILL SHOOT YOU.

When you attack a neutral target in low sec, you get a Global Criminal flag. Any sentry gun in range will shoot at you.
Some ships/setups can tank sentry guns for certain time/forever. Your ship was not one of those ships. Generally speaking only BC or bigger ships can tank sentry's for long enough.
However, ou can safely engage outlaws or war targets or people with Global criminal flag without fearing the entry gun response.

I believe the sentry guns do approximately 350 DPS, a mix of damage types, and they do cycle targets. So you can realistically tank them in a battlecruiser or battleship set up for the task. The sentry guns will kill frigates and cruisers very quickly, though.
As a newbie to piracy, try the asteroid belts. Just remember that once you get a global criminal countdown, don't warp to a station or stargate until the 15-minute countdown finishes.

As for people camping low-sec gates, they did not die because they prepared to take sentry fire.
A good tactic for low-sec gate camping if you're interested is to get a group of a few BC/BS or higher, all get aggro for the gate, and the sentries will [somewhat] slowly cycle through all of the people with gate aggression. This allows the fire to be more spread out, and not all concentrated on one target.
This video really helped me get into piracy, I suggest you watch it.

CONCORD in High sec is assured destruction. You CANNOT survive or escape CONCORD (and if you magically do, you get banned for 'sploits)
Sentry Guns in low sec is tankable (350-400 DPS), and as such you can survive killing targets, if you can tank both guns and the victim. ---- The Demigodess with a Conscience - An EVE IC Blog Personal Killboard |

Reminds me of my very 1st attempt at PVP ages ago. I took a Rax (with no doubt a very peculiar fit) in to a lowsec pocket, engaged the 1st target I saw and died. Then started to read up on all things PVP and security related :P I guess most have experienced that. Join RvB!

SENTRY GUN 101 (from a former Pirate)
1. Sentry guns have a range of 150km.
2. Sentry guns deal approximately 350 DPS, which is easily mitigated by a properly setup BC, BS, or HIC. Even some HACs can do it.
3. Sentry guns cycle roughly every 15-20 seconds between yourself and anyone else within range of them who also has a Global Criminal Countdown.
4. The only way to shake aggro from Sentry guns is to get out of range of them for 15 minutes and wait for that GCC/aggression timer to expire.
5. Sentry guns will pop your drones if you deploy them while under sentry fire.

CONCORD will not kill your, but Sentry guns are not concord. Think of them as faction based lol.
