It makes no sense that empty space would have so much ambient light but the dark sides of planets are just pitch black. Also it does not look good to have those black blobs everywhere.

Oh yes that would be nice.
Our ships have that effect so why not planets.

I agree. Remove that rediculous amount of ambient light from space and make space darker.

That's the problem with realism EvE, it is really messed up right now with the new planets. For instance, the dark side of ships are pretty bright, even when they are not illuminated by nearby objects(say light side of planet), but planets are pitch black. Yeah, I agree it looks stupid, despite looking like the real deal.
A compromise might be the best option tho, make it slightly lighter on the dark side and/or reduce background illumination.

That would be my preferred option as well.

No, its not supposed to be all through realistic, but even a cat on a fishstick can see that there is something fubared with OPs pic. This is what happens when you don't do stuff in context with the surroundings. So as I said, the best solution is probably the middle ground.
But I've seen people whining about space being too dark already...
Bottom line is, it looks stupid and out of place.

its supposed to be semi realistic, how about some systems having twin suns, pulsars etc to provide other light sources. Night side settlement lights as well Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

Having ambient lighting on planets would look ridiculous.
If anything, ships need less ambient light...

QFT
I want to see at least 1 system with a black space background. Also, needs more stars.

At the moment the ambient lighting of the background, that of the ships/stations and that of the planets don't line up.. Not only are the brightness values different and make it look terrible, the colors are off too.. I guess it will take until Dominion 1.2 till we see a fix for this.

that's even more messed up, but the black space background in that pic is nice.

When they first had the new planets on the test server, you could barely tell that you were looking at the night side of a planet. I agree that looking at a perfectly black orb looks silly, but I think plenty of the planets will look like a bright crescent on a black circle...which looks awesome and perfect to me.
