MacBook pro 15.4" 2.8GHz/4GB/500GB/SD 15" MC046B/A
Hello, i've just purchased a macbook pro laptop with the above specs. I wont have it for a few weeks, but I had a few questions, if anyone can answer.
1. Will this machine handle 1-2 clients relatively happily (while plugged into another monitor)
2. Is there a good substitute for Fraps on the Mac, if so can anyone point me in the right direction.
Thanks

Darkness, your macbook will handle 3 clients at a time with ease, the only issue is that the interfact is not as friendly as windows for multiple clients. You actually have to do some editing to launch codeing etc to run multiple clients, I will find the link and post it. and you hae to learn a few commands like Command/return to put it into windowed mode, 4 finger swipe to bring up concurent applications etc etc. The commands can be found by searching this forum. I love my mac book and I love eve but the side application suck
for example if you use teamspeex ( mac app) it sucks macirc sucks, etc etc.
I know in your game that you spend a lot of time solo playing but I also assume that you play in large gangs.
My suggestion is that you buy a copy of windows sp2 for about 60 dollars if you shop and boot camp install that. It is easy to do in mac , remember that the file system you need to creat is fat32 and use 32gigs of disk space. Actually once you do this you can install many other windows based games as mac based game worth playing are hard to come by.
Oh yeah remember to use bootcamp, when you turn on your computer keep the option key pressed down to activate bootcamp. This gem took me over an hour to figure out.
Also to enhance your gameing experience buy a wireless bluetooth mouse
after that you use eve just like normal.
I only connect to eve with my windows and do all other surfing etc on mac to avoid virus's.
I know that once your used to your MBP and how to operate it it will enhance your computing and gaming pleasure.

ah fantastic, thanks alot mate.
So basically yes it can run eve clients more than fine, but realistically the best thing to do is install windows on it using bootcamp.
With regards to "you need to creat is fat32 and use 32gigs of disk space" is there a guide for dummies on this somewhere? I love editing and the likes but really when it comes to most computer jargon not knowing anything is a step up from me.

the forums here is a wonderful source of information and should be one of your pinned websites.
Like I mabey not so well said, If I am in fleets I use windows because the secondary aps we like to use with eve such as irc and teamspeak suck as mac aps. But when I am playing alone on an empire alt of scouting target pos for supercap constructio I use Mac OS, I like playing itunes etc etc.
so yes get a copy of windows and bootcamp install for serious eve gaming.

Hi,
I've also just got a Mac book..but I have to say after a life time of PC's I finding it tricky. So, for the hard of learning, which one is the 'Options' key? is it the one with the squigly shape on?
Will I be able to run one Mac client and one windows client at the same time? I'm running Paralells and Windows 7.
Cheers

Yeah I have to say i've spent the last few days looking at certain programs and im hearing good things about parallels 5 - apparently its a fantastic program, but it seems alot of people are having issues with their customer services.
Nevertheless i'm definitely going to be getting the demo and testing it as soon as i get my macbook pro. It sounds so convenient in comparison to bootcamp, and yeah according to everything i've read and watched you should be able to have both programs open simultaneously without issue (if you have a good macbook).
Thanks for the forum link aswell, have bookmarked it!

This whole post is basically complete BS.
I've had no dramas running 2 clients with mac client on my macbook pro (even 3 clients on occasions). This is in big fleet fights (1 account in dictor, other accountin dread / BS).
If you don't want to have to press command + enter every time you load the eve client the eve wiki tells you how to get around it:
http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Running_Eve_in_windowed_mode_on_the_Mac
I have 3 voice chat programs installed since different alliances use different ones and sometimes I'm in fleet that uses something else; Teamspeex (which as the name suggests connects you to a TS server) Vent and Mumble (which my corp uses). When I was in a smaller alliance I had trouble with the codec the used in vent not being supported in the mac version, but new version of vent has since fixed that, most large alliances use a different lower bandwidth codec anyway.
Your complaint about irc is simply laughable I don't know how else to put it, there are literally hundreds of irc clients out there, hmm a simple google search for "osx irc client" returns 700,000 results.
I use X chat only because I used it on linux for years and years and it's what I'm used to, I assume by your post you are some windows fanboy who has only ever used mirc (and obv have no clue about how irc works).
edit: The mac client does have issues, I'm not saying it's 100% perfect, but certainly not worth buying a windows license just to play eve.
A few things I should point out if you do run eve client on macbook pro;
- By default the f1-f8 yes on OS X do stuff like turn up/down brightness volume etc, if you use these short cuts for pvp, you need to go into the macs system preferences and tick use all f1,f2 etc eys as standard function keys.
- Macbook pro trackpad has no rightclick, takes a day or two to get used to using two fingers in place of a right click, some screens in eve (like the in game map) are a bit annoying to navigate due to requiring to drag right click to work. OFC you can plugin usb / bluetooth mouse if you don't want to use track pad.
- Copy paste keys (on macs you use command + C, command + V etc) eve seems to get confused, sometimes they work sometimes you have to use control + c and control + V, web urls in particular screw up, eg pasting out of game text into in game chat, sometimes screws up

PS: Install SMC Fan Controls and get a decent heat absorption pad/cooling pad or your going to regret it a year or 2 from now... trust me... i've see what Apple calls "acceptable heat" standards do... you don't wana know what your keyboards back side looks like... trust me... I actually had to replace a motherboard (mainboard in apple's terms) on a MBP 15"... wasn't pretty... had me royally ####ed... couldn't do a damn thing about it except push SMCFanControls harder. Handles high heat my bloody shiny ass.... T.T;;;

NOt being a certified tech I only answered based on my experience. An my experience is that teamspeex suck as a mac app and the mac irc versions(s) I have used also suick so my advise to install bootcamp and use windows to play eve instead of spending hours and hours reading forums and mucking about with your computer trying to make you mac client act like windows.
Not as fancy with out all the tech mumble jumble but still honest and effective advise.
However thanks for the advise on cooling pads and I will look into this fan program as I do find that my machine is getting hotter soooner etc.
