Not sure this would be controversial or not, but in many MMO's when people go afk for extended periods some kind of AFK marker kicks in. Is there a reason why EVE never implemented anything like this?
There are a lot of plus sides to it, in fleets you could easily see if someone has fallen asleep or not come back from a bio. In corp/alliance you could quickly see how many people are active to make a quick judgement on if to put a fleet together.
There is a hell of a lot of AFK'ing in EVE, would it be such a stretch to add something like this? We have a system where we can add friends to a list, then get a green marker next to their name when they are online. Is it so crazy to have an orange one when they are AFK?
There's an argument to do with immersion, but really this is an MMO, you need to have certain tools at your disposal. Being able to tell if a player is at their keyboard or not is a fairly big one.
The big argument against here, is we would then be able to see when cloaky AFK'ers are actually AFK. I imagine this would be preferred though to some nerf to cloaking. There is still some metagaming available by just not sending any commands to the client you could remain to appear inactive.
Just a thought.

imho that AFK marker should be limited to: 1. alliance/corp mates 2. people i have explizitely flagged to see that status. (e.g. via a flag in your addressbook entry for the other player.)
that kind of intel does *not* belong into the hands of my enemies. if i like to harass a system with sitting in it AFK, my afkness status is none of your business.
if there ever will be support for afk markers, it should be really opt-in who can see that and not opt-out.

Add in an afk marker, remove local chat as an intel tool. Thus allies know if you are afk, everyone else doesn't even know you're in system. -----------------------------------------------------
