While watching the new Dominion video I noticed what looked like a Close In Weapons System on the Chimera class carriers in the clip. Not the extra cheesy smartbombs thankfully. So that has me thinking. We have rocket launchers and defender missiles which are in fact one of the forms of close defense real carriers are equipped with in addition to the well known gatling system.
Why not replace problematic not so smartbombs with an equally effective and actually smart system? I mean why not give us a system that will target and shoot drones? IRL the gatling CIWS isnt meant to shoot large objects like ships. Its made to pinpoint only small fast incomming targets. It has limited effect on ship sized targets.
So simply turn it on and it starts shredding hostile drones like a defender shreds incomming missiles. This will do a few things. It'll cut down on smartbomb related accidental poddings in fleet fights and the constant CONCORD lag fests we see from people abusing the smartbomb "mechanic" to get kills on targets of opertunity. Not that I care it happens but the extra stress on an already stressed system server is just dumb.
Thats my 2 cents.

It was in-game footage, which means it most likely was a AC turret firing at the carrier...

CIWS have been proven ineffective at intercepting inbound hostile systems and are getting phased out with the new phalanx pack systems. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 11OCT09

What do you mean by that? CIWS are a name for a weapon type, not a single system. It's like tanks. Are we talking about a Panzer VI tiger or a m4a3 sherman?

Car and a Tank can get you from point a to point b yet we dont call a car a tank or vice versa.
The problem with most CWIS systems is that they're to late. If they're firing at something in bound and if the complixity of the inbound system is significantly better or overwhelming than your CWIS system you're done for. Its been a constant problem with military technological development escalation.
Militaries are wanting to move away from a CWIS system and into a system that can intercept inbounds before they become vaible threats, something more along the lines of a point defense system. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 11OCT09
