Just for example, in the FW patch there were news posts about how the factions were getting all riled up at each other. In Apocrypha, there were posts about how some bad stuff went down and then all these wormholes kept popping up.
Did I miss some stories about CONCORD deciding to enforce the entirity of New Eden and lay down some fees?

It's not an in-game element its an OOG warning of things to come. "Pod Pilot" is just a euphemism for a pod person a la Invasion of the Body-Snatchers. Dominion is merely CCP acknowledging that they now control all of us pod people via subliminal messaging in the fancy new game mechanics (screenshot a Titan superweapon as its being fired, if you dare, blow it up in Photoshop to 1000x normal size and read the horrifying microfont text comprising the weapon graphics.) Trust not the wiles of the shifty Scandinavian race. Empyrean Age systematically broke down our collective will and turned us against each other both in and out of game. Dominion is CCP stepping in while we're in our state of collective vulnerability brought about by this inward turned antipathy so that they can deliver the coup-de-grace in their Evil Deed.
