You will die. Repeatedly. No matter what you do, unless you NEVER undock.
If the same person kills you repeatedly, you are doing it wrong. Do it right and that won't happen. (Don't give others a reasons to kill you repeatedly, and don't run into the same cmap 10 times in a row.)

But thats alot of money for ships and gear isn't it? If someone has a carrier would they fly it all the time? Or only in fleet? |

Only if you allow it to be. You can expect to die a lot at first when learning to PvP, so therefore you want to keep your costs down by flying around in frigates, cruisers and the like. Remember that T1 ships can be fully insured, so all you really stand to lose from each fight is the cost of the modules.

I have a carrier but my own experience with it is that I fly it rarely, in fact I haven't flown mine now for several months. In the biggest of fleets a dread or battleship is often preferred, so I usually find myself using the carrier for personal logistics only. And since I'm operating in wormhole space now, my carrier is pretty much all but redundant.
By all means aim for a carrier as *a* long-term goal if you wish, but as your *only* long term goal I suspect you may be disappointed if/when you get there, especially if PvP is still a concern for you at that point.

Edited by: Thai Wolf on 08/12/2009 23:38:11 Thanks Ben. How useful was your carrier when you did use it?

For me it was very useful, but only really because I was playing the game in such a way that a carrier was always going to be useful, as opposed to a carrier being something useful for anybody anywhere at any time. I don't believe the latter is the case otherwise I might still be using mine now.
While I helped rep a few POSs from time to time, I was primarily using it as a personal logistics boat, ferrying other ships and modules from empire space to 0.0 and back. This was especially handy for me as I live in an odd timezone (GMT+12) which meant I often had to rely on myself for those sorts of tasks, simply because there wasn't many others around me who were in a position to help.
As 0.0 space no longer interests me to any great degree, and since low-sec never did, and since I don't need one for what I'm doing now, and since carriers can't be flown in high security space, my carrier will remain docked for the forseeable future.
If you haven't done so already, ask yourself why you want a carrier. Think of any ship in Eve as a tool to help you reach your goals, rather than being the goal in itself. For example, one of my recent goals was to be able to run class 3 w-space sites comfortably without too much expense upfront. That led me to the drake, which meant some training on one of my alts as she couldn't fly drakes at first. Now she can, and consequently that goal has been achieved.

Quote: I've had a subscription to EVE for over 6-8 months and all I do is log on add training and then log off to play another game
this is perhaps your biggest problem, a noob with a 80 mil sp character and a carrier is still a noob. and by that i mean that it dosent mater how much you have skilled or how much money you have in game. but if you dont play the game regularly rather then just loging in to update skills then you wont have the actual experiance necessary to know how to survive in the game. many people make the same mistake you are and that is to just log in to update skills until they get a realy big ship but end up with no actual eperiancet o know what to do with the ship once they get it. roam around, find a group of players that you enjoy playing with and set short term goals to keep yourself busy while you atempt to fullfil your longer term goals, you will enjoy the game a lot more that way

Today, my good sir, you win EVE. |
