Edited by: MOS DEF on 05/12/2009 10:13:56 Edited by: MOS DEF on 05/12/2009 10:08:26 Currently i am playing eve with 2 monitors on a nvidia 8800 GTS 512. Resolutions are 1920x1200 and 1920x1080. Performance is ok but could be better.
I am wondering now if i could buy a dual GPU card (or just an additional 8800 GTS) and assigne a gPU to each client. Is that possible? I am not talking about SLI or crossfire here. The loadbalancing issue between two clients would remain i think. (Or not SLI users comment please.) I`d prefer a single card with 2 GPUs because 2 cars would make my case cramped (i do have 2 pci 16 slots though). Would two seperate cards (one monotor for each card) be better?
Any feedback from users doing this would be helpful.
Edit: Oh and a stronger GPU alone wont help. Corp mate has an ATI 4850 and gets less FPS then i do (my xeon quad core overclocked to 3.5 ghz probably makes the difference). If anyone got a 5850 (single card) with two monitors and two clients running i`d be interested int he FPS you get on both clients. ___

Multiple GPU cards (such as 4870x2) do not support windowed gaming, only one GPU at a time with windows for now. Dual kick in for fullscreen only, but I don't know how you'd run full screen on different monitors at once without the alt-tab effect between them. I'd say multiple cards, my 4870x2 on max specs windowed with forced AA ranges from 25-55. I play 3 clients at once with a bit lowered specs and it can play them all at once 60fps without too much trouble.

Xechor that`s what i feared. What i want is 2 windowed clients that run at full speed (one GPU each). Fullscreen would be perfect but as you said one client will allways minimize if you go to the other wich makes this impossible sadly. ___

I have 2 9800 GT's running and I sadly must confirm this is the case. Even though you can set eve to use a diffrent card, it basically doesn't matter when windowed.
I Opted to attach my laptop to the second 24 inch instead and switch the monitor to that when i play (i use two monis for work), so i can have the same effect but have to use two mice/KB.

Edited by: MOS DEF on 05/12/2009 10:35:28 So assigning a client to each graphics card does not help at all in windowed mode? I am asking this because i just saw that ATI radeon HD 5770s are very cheap and fast. In crossfire as fast as a 5870 and for eve i¦d planned one card for each client. Kinda pointless if it doesn`t work though. If i end up with one client at 100 fps and the other at 30 i`ll get what i have no basically. ___

Don't know if this'll help at all, but pre-Dominion I was running 2 clients on 2 monitors in windowed mode using eve-mover to give me fake fullscreen. Main at 1680x1050, alt at 1280x1024. Both clients were set to Interval one and I got a stable 60fps on both.
Post-Dominion, meh, I'm really struggling. I'm still trying to tweak the settings, but I've had to set both clients to Interval immediate to acheive a fluctuating 40-70fps on both. The problem is the card temperatures are getting a bit too high for comfort doing that.

well that's utter crap cos i am running 2 gpu's windowed mode i have one monitor plugged into the on-board crap card, and the other into my other gpu, and it works fine across 2 monitors windowed, i am using win7 though, i don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Put textures to Medium, Little actual visable difference but it gave me my stable FPS back.

don¦t know for nvidia, but since i¦m running ati (3870x2) my .2isk if you are running the gpu¦s not in crossfire mode each of them takes 1 monitor, or 2 monitors on a 4 monitor setup like mine. so playing eve in windowed mode on one monitor each is automaticly giving each eve one gpu. with evemon able to relovate the windows to make them look like fullscreen theres no problem there, and you can just drag youre mouse over to the other eve client without crtl+tab like you¦d have to in fullscreen.
with catalyst (driversuite of ati) being able to start aplications with profiles i set up my main eve to start with crossfire enabled thus running on both gpu¦s, but starting my alt eve with crossfire disabled to unlink the gpu¦s. so if i start my alt acc i will automaticly split my gpu¦s across my monitors. works fine for me.

Use 2 video cards one for each monitor.
I used to run 1 video card for 2 monitors and I would always get normal FPS on the monitor I was active on and the secondary monitor would drop down to 10 or 20 FPS. When I clicked over to the other one the FPS would flip.
When I made this computer I put in 2 video cards. Now I get a a solid 60 FPS on both monitors regardless of which screen is active. And I am running both in 2048 x 1152
Use window mode and use eve-mover or its like. This way you have what appears to be 2 clients running in full screen but none of the issues of clients minimizing when you click the other screen. Don't forget to make sure each client uses a different video card in the options of the eve client.
By the way I am getting the solid 60 FPS on the followingn and you should have no issues with getting better cards and cheaper.

Edited by: Clone 1 on 05/12/2009 15:46:23 Its a good question, multi card for mult-client. Current setup:
ATI Driver version: 8.66.6-091006a-089804E Win 7 64bit, 4GB, ATI 4850 1GB + ATI 5770 1GB Core2Duo E8200 @ 2.8GHz
Two setups of EVE to keep seperate settings of each. One for 5770 one for 4850.
Settings pic V-Sync off, interval immediate
2 monitors on Single 5770 card
Screen 1: 5770_1 active 70-90fps, inactive 55fps
Screen 2: 5770_2 active 70-80fps, inactive 43-50fps
Screen 1 on 5770, Screen 2 on 4850
Screen 1: 5770 active 115-150fps, inactive 71fps
Screen 2: 4850 active 115-130fps, inactive 55-60fps
*Display adapter was set to specific display in eve settings for each monitor.
As you can see there is a definite benefit for your active client with 2 cards, but for the inactive one there is only a small benefit.

I have two 4870's. I've assigned two clients to their individual cards.
It can be done, and it does work. ---

If you are stuck using 2 computers on one desk have a look at synergy which takes away the need of switching mouse and keyboard all the time.
http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/
Still, would be interested if it works better on Nvidia Cards since it is mostly ATI-users posting ATM ___ CCP Garthagk: "And that is why GMs aren't DEVs"

Last Item DO NOT SCIMP ON THE RAM, this INCLUDES the VIDEO CARD. If you do you WILL pay for it.
Thanks for this very valuable info. Ordered two ATI HD 5770 1024 mb now. They are quite cheap and perform great in crossfire in other games.

i am currently running 4 accounts on 4 monitors 2 lcd(6800), 2 crt,(7600GS)all windowed @1280 X 1024, and using eve win helper to fake Fullscreen, each account on separate install and assigned to own GPU (6800 1&3, 7600 2&4)
i average 40FPS +/- 10 when on that account and 30FPS when not selected, this also depends if i'm in close or camera-ed way out. i havn't figure out interval settings as yet just default optomised for performance

My graphics card is Asus 4890.
Edit: i run the accounts in two different monitors with evemover.

Just get one reasonably good GPU and you're done..
The GTX275 I have runs two instancess of EvE at 1920 x 1200 with everything maxed at over 60fps, and its hardly a high end card.
The 8800 GTS was a good card but its getting on a bit now. You should see a nice bost from any current generation mid range card.

A radeon 5850 seeem to work really nice for eve, even with two clients. I do not have two 24" monitors, but I tested just now with my 24" 1920x1200 and 17" 1280x1024 monitor:
Primary screen 24" = 110 fps, no forced AA/AF Secondary screen 17" = 80 fps, no forced AA/AF
I use a Q6600 processor @ 3,4 GHz btw.
I did this test just now with two monitors, else I like having them both running on top of eachother on the main monitor, using the secondary monitor for webbrowsing. I also usually use "interval one", limiting fps to 60.
What I like most about my 5850 is it is quiet. Fan never seem to spin more than 29-30 %. Might spin higher in the summer time. With 40% the fan is making noise, when set manually to 40%. I was planning to buy a custom gpu cooler and fan, but now I won't since it's so quiet. Even with lots of AA/AF the fan never spin more than around 29-30 %.
There is apparantly a fps "bug" ingame when using mining drones afaik. I spent time trying to figure out more about this, being unsuccessful. There seem to be some kind of memory leak with rising memory, cpu and thus falling fps. Turning off "effects" "fix'es" this issue and fps stay at 60, with lots of mining drones working.

Edited by: Darth Sith on 07/12/2009 13:07:52 Confirming that a 3 monitor setup works on the ATI 5870 w/ the funky active cable.
Here is a crappy pic of my rig from my blackberry, rez is 5870 x 1200 if i remember right.
Pic
Rest of the rig is a core i7 @ 2.92 Ghz / 6 GB ram / 120 Gb OCZ SSD's. Frame rates are decent but I notice some stuttering when panning across some of the new planets. Does not seem to happen with all planets though so I am thinking there still may need to be some tweeking of the client code on the CCP side.
