Hia guys
Just thought I'd pop in and ask some questions regarding the new starfield. It looks great and everything, but I really wouldn't mind having a better looking starfield background.
From what I know (and seen, TriExporter ftw!), EVE uses the DDS format for many (most) of it's textures and other images.
One thing that I'm curious about, seeing as the DDS extension offers scalability in image-size (perfect for different gpus with different amounts of dedicated memory), why not let us have a setting to increase the resolution for (at least) the starfields from High to Extreme... Seriously, I understand why you have limitations on the res (memory-budgets), but still, many of us have more than 1GB of dedicated gpu ram, so if the starfield ends up at 4800 something KB instead of 2400 KB, (which it is at now), doesn't really affect us that much performance wise but would really improve the visual quality of the starfield...!
Again, with people having less than 1GB that when it comes to dedicated gpu memory you can just scale it down in dds anyways, so... Why not?

Edited by: Winterblink on 08/12/2009 23:43:39 Zoom in to the starfield (hold rmb+lmb, move mouse forward), you'll see why it looks the way it does without zooming.
Answer for the lazy: it's a LOD thing. :)
Edit: Worth noting that I kinda went "blech" when I first saw it too, it does look a bit muddy.

Agree the starfields and nebulas and clouds and ugly red in Minmatar space are craptastic. Remember when you needed real PC to run Eve? now any old WoW player can run it |

Well yeah, I know about the zoom.
Doesn't really change anything though; I still wouldn't mind if we could up the resolution on the starfield.

I'm pretty sure starfields use quite small texture tiled multiple times or even multiple layers of such textures to eliminate repeated look. So even if you double the resolution it still should be light on resources.
Why some stars are so ugly if zoomed in is beyond me but probably it's the same reason why we still have those old nebula backgrounds - CCP art department is too busy... probably with this new dust thing.
