Think it was a hacking/salvage site, went up and salvaged, done..then 3 BS's appeared, are they all like this? Can i not solo explore/loot/salvage in a T1 frig? Or do i need a BS for all of these sites?

What security space were you in?

The difficulty of a site is vaguely related to the security of the space you're in. I'd say 0.4+ is soloable in a cruiser on a regular basis. This doesn't include wormholes, where class 1 sites are probably BC soloable, class 2 are BS and the rest are progressively harder.

Well you MIGHT take BS rats if you are well skilled in a BC and basically "kite" them, but your limitations should be known and well - things can still go bad.

Edited by: Menzies Campbell on 12/12/2009 08:18:08 It is possible to solo BS rats in frigates.
1. Pack lots of ammo 2. Keep a close tight orbit to maintain transversal 3. Have some modi****of a tank. A shield booster or an armor rep alone would be fine, just to keep topping up your HP. 4. Fit a nos. With that you should be able to feed your booster/rep long enough to destroy them. 5. Pack lots of ammo.
EDIT - lol at modic.u.m being censored

I can confirm that this works, though it's by no means a quick process. I went ratting in lowsec with a Rifter and managed to take down a BS rat ... eventually, it took ~20m or so of just orbiting him and pounding away (and I didn't think I could break his tank for a bit there), but it eventually gave way. I'm guessing that anyone with good Gunnery skills wouldn't have nearly as much trouble doing it, but it is a thrill when you finally pull it off. I think my build was something like this (it was a bit ago, and I'm not in-game, so I don't remember 100%):
[Rifter, Sansha Ratting] Gyrostabilizer I Damage Control I Small Armor Repairer I
'Langour' Drive Disruptor I Small Shield Extender I 1MN Afterburner I
200mm AutoCannon I, EMP S 200mm AutoCannon I, EMP S 200mm AutoCannon I, EMP S Rocket Launcher I, Gremlin Rocket
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
However, you won't be able to do stuff like this all the time, that long a battle is a really bad idea in low/nullsec, I use a Thorax with about the same tactics now (much better DPS and tank).

You can find sites best with the frigate hulls (t1 or t2)designed for the purpose, but you won't be able to harvest the bounty of the exploration sites with your exploration frigate. You can't even do that in high sec. The sites are all like you described. It's the old risk reward balance. If you want the rewards of 0.0 space cosmic signatures, you will have to fight the npc's first. Even a miner drooling over a 0.0 gravimetric belt will have to get the npc rats out of the way first.

Found a Radar site last night in a .6 system. Used an Imicus. The rats were only some frigs and a few destroyers. All I had were 3 drones, my ship had no guns whatsoever. Drones took them down without a single problem.
The loot I got from that site was worth just a tad under 30mil. After that, I went next door to the neighboring system and scanned that one down. It was a .7 system. Found a Magnetometric site. Loot from that site was a tad over 12mil. For both sites, including scan time and rats killin, took me about 30-45min.
42mil in less than an hour and had next to zero risk loosing my ship.
To answer the question "Can I not solo explore/loot/salvage in a T1 frig?"
Yes, Yes you certainly can. A 10th of all I earn I keep for myself. |

Even in lowsec there are several well paying Radar/Mag sites that have no Npc at the beginning and only might spawn some as you open cans. But often you will find a few frigs and destroyer so if you use something like a Vexor or Arbitrator that can fit Codebreaker, Analyzer, Salvager, some tank AND use the drones to take out frigs and destroyers you can solo every single Radar/Mag site in high or lowsec. Still not 0.0 though, those require something along the line of a Hac, BC or BS And why is there still nothing that sets content apart from signature? Is that intentional or technically imposible? |

Pilgrim
If you cant use yet, skill up for it. It is like a swiss army knife when it comes to exploration, granted if you fit it right.

Since we seem to to be talking sites here I have a very stupid question. Say I scan down a site, bookmark it, warp in and take it out. If I warp to that bookmark the next day, will that site still be there or do they cycle elsewhere after DT?

They despawn after some time, sometimes you can find them the next day but from my experience they seem to last somewhere in the range of 24 hours on average though its hard to tell as they seem to get a new signature name after dt or maybe after logging out and in, i dont know.
And yes Pilgrim is really awesome, at least when it comes to lowsec Radar/Mag sites, BS can get a little tough if they show in groups. Im currently saving for a Drone Proteus with Interdiction Nullifier, T2 Cloak, MWD and all the canopeners. Can tank 1k dps with the correct resists and field 4 Heavys with 10%damage boost per level, damn i cant wait. ^^ And why is there still nothing that sets content apart from signature? So it's pretty much pointless to bookmark them eh?
