Can we get ccp to put a reverse option on my ships, would be handy for carriers..lol Even the shuttle has thrusters in front that would enable it to go in reverse...

But then we'd end up with elderly players smashing into the station when they forget the ship was still in reverse and go to full speed.

How do EVE ships just flip on a dime anyways? This has always puzzled/bothered me (especially with large multi-km ships flipping around).

The 'technical' explanation is that the server does not keep track of the orientation of the ship, only the velocity (speed and direction). All model orientation is done client-side. That's why, for example, when you land on grid you see ships orienting themselves and you sometimes see ships warping backwards or sideways.
What about the RP explanation? ..I don't know. Maybe the warp engines make the ship 'slippery'. EVE is after all submarines in space.

Edited by: Smegly on 12/12/2009 10:29:16 i think reverse engines would be good not just for roleplaying but potentially for people wanting to make EVE machinimas, such as the famous Clear Skys.
As im sure there are certain aspects where if we had reverse engines they could come in handy for that element.
EDIT: correcting a typo.

The Gallente are french after all arent they? They need a reverse option to flee effective from the battlefield. You know: "Why does french tanks have rear view mirrors? To keep an eye on the front-line."

The most important consequence for this thread is that backwards thrusters are already in the game. Just accelerate in the opposite direction, and you get exactly what you want.
