I'm curious, since you're an Apple tech, have you tried basic improvements to the heatsink, such as lapping/polishing the heat transfer plates, and using a good, proper thermal compound like Arctic Silver Matrix? At least for me, iStat is usually showing at least a 10˚C difference between chip temp and heatsink temp, so I have to imagine there's some sort of deficiency there. CCP isn't the only one to blame for Apple's design compromises. Airflow could be vastly improved using a thicker chassis with larger air vents. Part of me wishes they had, part of me is glad they didn't.

Woah. When did Macs take a 25% stake of the market? That number just doesn't sound feasible. Figured it was closer to 10%, with under 8% globally.
All that said... I'm running 10.6 and for the most part, am completely fine. Some of the persistent issues (broken jukebox, icons in the market jumping out of place, etc.) are still there, but it's been running rock steady on my early '09 MBP 17". Temps are under control with fans at full tilt under SMC FC, rarely straying north of 67˚C (which is still a bit toasty for my tastes, but not stupid hot). That's with the 9600; with the 9400, frames drop unless I play windowed at lowest res, but temps are much better all around.
The reason I mentioned the thermal compound is that I'm going to be trying it out; I've heard others say it dropped temps by 3-7˚C, so I figured it's worth a shot (and yes, I know full well just what an undertaking I'm suggesting here, I've taken the fans out before because they were clogged with dust, and have seen what else it would take to go "all the way"; I also find it somewhat amusing that the logic board has little miniature shock absorbers!).
