Hey, I got a small problem, what kind of guns are best for a Maelstrom when you're doing missions? The enemy often orbits around 15km away from me wich is too short for artillery and too long for autocannons as it seems, I got some trubbles with it, my drones can't really take care of everything. For the moment I'm doing lvl II quests on with my Mael, I know I suppose it is pretty oversized for that but I like it.
Any tip on what I should do or what I shuld fit to the ship?

Edited by: Marko Riva on 17/12/2009 18:23:01 Lots of people fit 1400's but to me 1200's are a lot better, easier to fit, better tracking and less annoying cycle time. But if you do minnie missions a lot where they come real close real fast, switch to 800mm AC's and fit 1-2 tracking enhancers in low.
Something like this;
[Maelstrom, PVE] Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Tracking Enhancer II Tracking Enhancer II
Large Shield Booster II Shield Boost Amplifier II Explosion Dampening Field II Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II Heavy Capacitor Booster II, Cap Booster 800
800mm Repeating Artillery II, EMP L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, EMP L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, EMP L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, EMP L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, EMP L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, EMP L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, EMP L 800mm Repeating Artillery II, EMP L
Large Projectile Ambit Extension I Large Projectile Ambit Extension I Large Projectile Metastasis Adjuster I
Valkyrie II x5 Warrior II x5
- edit-
Oh wait, lvl 2 missions? get the hell out of that Mael. it's actually slowing you down and you won't learn anything. Use a rupture or hurricane if you must.

Use a cane. You'll like it too, and its much better suited for the job.
And move to ships and modules.

Hmm a Cane eh? What is good when it comes to fitting that one then? I seem to allmost only miss the enemy with my 800mm autocannons, and that is pretty annoying! So why EMP L, they got -50% to range bonus.. :/

1) This is not the right forum section. Check "missions and explorations". Also, it's called "missions and explorations" because quests do not exist in EVE that I am aware of
2) You don't do level 2 missions in a mael. A large ship (using large turrets) fights against small ships by using drones and such. You will not hit most cruisers, let alone a frigate, with large turrets. You should be doing level 2 missions in at MOST a battlecruiser. Which brings me to point 3:
3) You shouldn't be flying a battleship at all if you don't have drone skills. Drones are critical.
4) EMP L has a massive range penalty, but does great damage to compensate. Midranged ammo gives a tracking bonus, however.

Autocannon have a HUGE falloff, best in the game. Best yet, Falloff is unaffected by ammo choice, so while your optimal gets tanked using the short range ammo, 15km is still going to be in the 85% hit range for the large AC.
Aside from that, AltOfFermentationMaster is correct. ;)

Autocannons are not really ment to fight in optimum. You will spend so much time to get into range you will want to rip your hair out. In my maelstrom with level 4 in just about every requirement right now, I hit out to 34kms where Gist saints hang out. Takes a bit long then the other Angel BS that orbit at 10 kms or less, but its awesome. I loved 1200 and 1400 artillery for the 3 weeks I was using it prior to Dominion but I can't stand the cycle time now, its way to long even with the awesome punch it packs . Training up Sentry drones when I got to do missions at distanced greater then 40km to fight stuff, then its a couple weeks for heavies and by feburary I will start concentrating on the Vargur and tech 2 auto cannons to spew barrage ammo out to obsene ranges .

This is some crappy advice these people are giving you...
The key here is: use the correct ship. Even a battlecruiser is way too much for a Lv 2. Use a cruiser at most. (I did them in a rupture, works very well) You can even do them in a frigate.
Lv 1 : Frigate Lv 2 : Cruiser Lv 3 : Battlecruiser Lv 4 : Battleship
How can you afford a maelstrom if you are still doing Lv 2 missions?

And just to go against the flow....
The Cyclone may be a better option than a Hurricane. Granted it doesnt have the gank that a cane can but it is a shield tanker the same as the Maelstrom, so the skills you need for the 'strom are the same as for the 'clone.
Battlecruisers use Crusier class wepons, which are designed to engage frigates and cruisers. This fact alone will make your level 2 missions easier. Battleships require good skills to be effective, skills you will learn as you fly the smaller ships in the game. Bigger is not always better.
Good Luck

Also the cyclone is easier to tank up for level 3's
Hint: look for some pith small booster - you can keep using it on your mael lateron. yes, small. the meds are too expensive.
[Cyclone, clone - tech I weapons] Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Damage Control II
Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Shield Boost Amplifier II Invulnerability Field II Ballistic Deflection Field II Heat Dissipation Field II
650mm Medium Gallium I Cannon, EMP M 650mm Medium Gallium I Cannon, EMP M 650mm Medium Gallium I Cannon, EMP M 650mm Medium Gallium I Cannon, EMP M 650mm Medium Gallium I Cannon, EMP M 'Malkuth' Heavy Missile Launcher I, Thunderbolt Heavy Missile 'Malkuth' Heavy Missile Launcher I, Thunderbolt Heavy Missile 'Malkuth' Heavy Missile Launcher I, Thunderbolt Heavy Missile
Medium Capacitor Control Circuit I Medium Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I Medium Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer I
Hammerhead II x4
Yes you will need some fitting skills and such.
Tho whole thing is about 50 Mill + the pith booster.
If you can fit this: Level two's are laughable, level III's easy and I have done some level 4 in this for giggles. (altho I have more faction stuff and tech II weapons and stuff on mine *g*)
Also: train for drones! You NEED them on a battleship. And they are a good boost to anything else.
(the guns are kindof expensive... so you might just use "the best you found".

As the previous posters have said: For lvl IIs you will be wasting half your ammo in a Maelstrom. Use a Rupture or a Bellicose (people will laugh at your for flying one, but it is a seriously underestimated ship: fast, shield tanking, nice drone bay, good damage).
For level IIIs use a Hurricane or a Cyclone. I did all my level IIIs in an artillery Cyclone. Similarly to the Bellicose, it shield tanks, does decent damage and has a good drone bay.

Good advise. Rupture & dual 180's is what i use for lvl 2's.

You can do level 2s fine with the Mael's drone bay alone... if you can't, you dont want to be doing l4s in it.
However I'd use a BC for those and l3s ( for now ), cruiser sized guns are a rather more efficient way of doing them.
Autocannons, btw, to answer the original question.
