Edited by: Arik VanClaw on 17/12/2009 19:43:51 Pretty amazing this one. Got this in a forward at work, not sure how many have seen this but I was blown away. Below is synopsis of the performance and below that the link to the youtube video.
"This video shows the winner of "Ukraine's Got Talent", Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch. The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about $75,000. She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated. It is replaced by a woman's face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman's face appears. She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier. This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house. In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye. The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine, resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million.
Kseniya Simonova says: "I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears. And there's surely no bigger compliment.""

My Grandfather was a young Ukrainian during WW2, and was drafted into the Red Army, and was subsequently captured and 'drafted' into the German SS, apparently to do the dirty work. We never heard about what happened between being in the Red Army and the SS, but we heard they were on thier hands and knees begging to be taken by the British, because if they went home to the Ukraine they would have been shot as deserters, even for being a POW. He was one of the lucky ones who made it the UK to start over, he was a messed up person though.

Absolutely awesome. That young woman has a lot of talent. [i]The healthy human mind doesn't wake up in the morning thinking this is it's last day on Earth. But I think that's a luxury, not a curse. To know you're close to the end is a kind of freedom. Go |

My gradfather volunteered for Ukrainian patriots and so ended up on the ****'s side (or rather against the Russians). He too had to march across Europe at the end of the war to surrender to the allies and ended up in Bradford in the UK
He only talks about the war when he's drinking and even then it's just snippits of this and that. But he's really mellow now in his old age. Think he's just greatful to be alive.

For Ukrainian talent, all the radio transmissions and commentary overlaid on the movie is done in Russian. Her last name ending in -ova is also Russian.

This just in: Russians make up a significant portion of the population of Ukraine. Besides, there isn't exactly a clear distinction between Russian and Ukrainian, it overlaps a lot. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

Ukraine separated from Russia and ever since then Ukranians have tried to squish out any traces of Russian influence. I was noting the irony in this video.

There is no irony in the video. Russians and Ukrainians (and a score of other nationalities) fought side-by-side in that war for a common goal.
The republics, including Russia, separated from the USSR, not from Russia. The current "squishing" is being done by a short-sighted puppet regime with an almost zero popular support. ...
