ok so lets say i have a mining barge thats all decked out with miners and such. how am i supposed to deal with serpentis? mine in .9 up? or are npcs not in every asteroid belt? or is mining anything below .9 supposed to be like group mining based? ty.

Normal is to use scout drones. Many use a full flight but in all honesty with decent droneskills 2 or even 1 is enough and you can then use 3-4 miningdrones if wanted.
In groupmining with more than 1 miningship only 1 really needs combatdrones and then act as ratkiller, allowing the rest to use purely miningdrones.

Light drones to be precise.
In a Hulk I usually carry a flight of light drones and a flight of mining drones.
In a Retriever you can go down to 0.5 pretty safe but if you mine AFK you will lose it.
A Hulk can be permatanked and can tank highsec rats with ease so AFKish mining can be done (but eventually the rats will kill you mining drones). Same with normal combat ships fitted for mining (i.e. not haulers or other mining barges).
Set your drones to passive if jetcan mining or the drones will aggro on can-thieves. Who can then blow you up without CONCORD interfering, as you shot first.
Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this!

Heh, this is indeed a long-held assumption on my part. Good to know.
So by extending this, ninja looters will also not be shot upon if your drones are set to aggressive and they loot your wrecks ?
EDIT : It's rather obvious I've never been a pirate.

No, they won't attack. I know this because... a friend.. told me. Right. A friend. How else would I know?
On a completely unrelated note: NEVER react to can flippers and/or ninja salvagers at all. No convo, no shooting, NO smacktalk. Unless you're baiting, of course. Then shooting is fine. |

The answer is obvious...take off a strip miner and put a smartbomb on there
