When wrecks and containers are abandoned, they will turn blue. This means it's alright to loot and/or salvage them. However, when they are yellow and you either loot and/or salvage them, you are stealing.
Since owners have the option of abandoning their wrecks and containers, anyone looting and/or salvaging their property while it's yellow are stealing from them. The owner's may want to loot and/or salvage later on within two hours before they disappear by natural phenomenon and chose not to abandon them.
When wrecks and containers are white, they may either belong to you or your corp mate. Check the information of the owner before looting and/or salvaging by hovering your mouse over the property in space or in the overview board and select 'show info' for pilot's portrait. This way you won't end up stealing your corp mate's property.
Disregard the fact that you can ninja salvage wrecks. Rules have changed since we can now abandon wrecks and containers so that others can loot and/or salvage then legally.

Say what?
So if I salvage from a yellow wreck I get red flagged?
Wow that just goes against everything CCP ever said about ninja salvaging and gives mission runners yet another bonus thy don't need!

Uh, you still don't get flagged for salvaging yellow wrecks as far as I know.

I see what you did there. Salvaging a wreck, yellow or not, is not stealing and will not flag you. Just don't take the any ammo/mods/commodities from said wreck, salvage only.

Supposed your car was wrecked in accident and want to salvage what's left of it. Would you want someone to salvage it when you haven't abandon it?

If i was driving it in a computer game called EvE Online, then it would be fair game.
