somthing iv thought of is to make the ships a bit more customiseable in terms of looks.
Dunno if this has been thought of before, but wouldnt the ability to give your ship its own Paintjob be kinda good?
Would mean you felt like you had somthing truely unquie. how you would do this is either buying a ready made one, or makeing it yourself and then uploading it.
Just an idea.

Problem is is that this would take up bandwith, because every time you entered a system you would have to download everyone's custom paintjob. Course, you could always turn the option off, but whatever... ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |

Being allowed to edit your paint job client side is one thing. Implementing it server side might be bad. Maybe if it was allowed it for industrials only..
Offering multiple models, while not exactly custom, would also multiply the market database. Not necessarilly an impossible thing I imagine.
I guess they could replace the char modeller, but I think that is just a simple 2d image file on the server. Waste of good artistic and programming effort not to put it to other uses. We could make cool alliance and corp logos with something like that.
"Oh you mean them guys with the pink punishers logo?"
Ok maybe it isn't that good of an idea. I like logo maker systems where you combine multiple complex morphable objects into images of course. Dunno how well it would translate to corp logos. A nice replacement for local I would imagine.

since we're getting all these improved versions of ships with new paintjobs, i'm gonna say CCP is abandoning the idea of a custom paintjob. it could be done reasonably easily, using a paint by color scheme where every ship would have 10 selectable color schemes for, say, five areas of the ship. that's only a few values to translate into a very customized look, all applied to the ship in the same way a sun's color changes what color your ship looks like.
but like i said, prolly not gonna be done because the Devs don't wanna see all their pretty ships turn into mockery in space. pink Thoraxes, rainbow colored Iterons, etc.
we could, perhaps, choose from several present skins. that would be something neat, but would keep the skinners at CCP busy for years with no time to work on anything new...
i really would like to see corp logos on the ships. these would not take much time at all to load as all the images are already in the client. it's just a matter of what selections were made during corp logo creation or adjustment.

both earth and beyond and homeworld 2 have variations of options for bothj paint scheme and decals.
I had read somewhere that early Eve (beta?) did have some kind of paint scheme editors or something like one.
I can't see any real problems with implementing this idea, except to say that it would prolly be alot of programming work that could be better used on higher priority stuff like fixing the game of the little bugs and stuff.
But if its doable and time can be found i would love to see paint shop modules and stations where you can pay alot of money to have your ship painted.
