Seems those three are the most popular around here as portable USB Hd's.
Since the pricing is somewhat similar taking a few dollars more or less, wich one you guys reccomend?
I have only tried WD before, my passport line, and they seem ok, but the LG one looks sleek enough and the LaCie ones with the "rugged" style intrigue me. Are they any good?

im real happy plus it was the cheapest brand?! it has some really sharp corners so if its for the backpack dotn get one of those :)
when i look back i should have gotten a 2.5" instead.

i got a few WD internal hard drives, if their external are as good as their internal, WD is the way to go.

i have a couple of the sharp edged rectangular LaCies, they look real nice but i find the quality lacking. The drives themselves are all kinds of makes and not exactly grade A(I have a 500G and 1T, one of em is toshiba, the other samsung if i remember correctly). The model I have also has a big heat problem, stack 2 of them tops, and they will run hot regardless. The 1TB one's power supply is also barely up to the job.
I would suggest going for the WD, then at least you know you will have a quality drive (though i find the boxes too bulky to my taste). Also agree with one of the previous poster about getting a 2,5" model if you are on the road a lot. Slapping one together with an empty box and drive of choice also aint a bad idea, but you miss out on the package deals you often get with the readymade product. -----

I have four WD drives in my computer. At work we have quite a few WD drives as well. If their external drives are as good as their internal ones...
... avoid them like the plague.
Three of my four drives are failed or failing, one less than a year old. And we have a massive cardboard crate we toss dead hard drives in. The box is full of almost entirely only WD drives. The failure rate on WD drives, at least in my experience, is hilariously horrid. |

Avoid LaCie. I got three of em, and they all crashed within 12 months.. Maybe I was just unlucky, but trust me, I personally wont be buying em anymore! Dataloss is....
WD is good though, and I have had lots of good experience with Segate. Bufallo is a brand I like too.

hmmm ... Those LaCie ones I really never quited liked them.
Choosing between the LG/WD and an odd looking Samsung one, all of them in 2.5'' , I decided to go WD.
I must say that prior experience and seeing some of the replies here made me go WD.
Got me a brand new My passport 500gig 2.5 inches. The bundled software is very neat and polished and eases backup. Did I mention they look really really sleek and gorgeous? .
Love the security choice, since its not a regular open hd, perhaps not the best security around but even better than my old portable drive, wich was basically open to anyone, if you forget the password you're screwed tho
But it looks awesomeee!!!
There's something about a neat symmetrical black plastic shiny slim box that has a small light blue led going on and off that makes me drool about it's beauty. ---

Edited by: sukmanobov on 22/12/2009 01:02:12 Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor (owned by seagate), IBM (hatachi) Are the most common 99% of the other makers out there just use hard drives from these manufacturers. theres also samsung but iv'e personaly never used a External version.
Iv'e owned a Maxtor one Touch 4/5 (awesome kit), Freecom 500GB external (Realy Well built), Western Digital 1TB elements (Still using this beast).
Seagate Black Edition is nice peace of kit but expensive. --------------------------------
