Do high-skillpoint characters still mine in highsec? I ask this because I don't really intend to get my mining alt to join a corporation and hit 0.0 mining ever; hence I plan on mining 'roids in highsec for the rest of this character's life.
Therefore I have a few questions:
1. Is highsec mining (1.0 and 0.9) really profitable in the long-run?
2. Is it unheard of; mining alts only mining in rat-free belts.
3. What's the most profitable highsec ore to sell?
4. What's the most profitable highsec mineral to sell?

While my main and 2 alts are part of a corporation that does a lot of hi-sec mining for production purposes, I do occasionally mine independently of the corp.
Mining solo in hi-sec (1.0->.5) systems can be lucrative, especially now with the Trit buff. Before I had dedicated mining alts, I would setup my hulk or mack with expanders and cargo rigs to minimize the amount of trips to/from the station (due to lack of a dedicated hauler).
As far as what to sell/refine, there's a lot of calculators out there, according to one index I use, Scordite is this current ore:isk leader, but it fluctuates with the market demand.

Also forgot to ask whether moon mining is as lucrative as people make it out to be. If it is I can start right away.
Should I be careful of pirates, etc?

Lots of money can be made moon mining, yes. However, you are a huge target for pirates.
What would a sane pirate go after, a tank with guns covering the outside, or a hauler/miner with armor slightly thicker than a piece of paper?

You cannot moon mine in hisec. 0.3 and lower only. AND moon mining requires a POS for the miner to anchor to. From my understanding, very few moons outside of nullsec are actually profitable to only mine with a POS. -----------------------------------

Well avatar age has nothing to do with whether you mine in 0.0 or empire, thats more of a individual preference.
1. Is highsec mining (1.0 and 0.9) really profitable in the long-run? Its ok profit not as good as bistot & other top end 0.0 ores, you need to go down to 5.0 sec to find other ore types off which can be profitable.
2. Is it unheard of; mining alts only mining in rat-free belts. Yes, lazy carebears do that quite often, favoured method is AFK hauler fitted with a mining laser. A hulk pilot with half decent skills can tank a small rat spawn easy & make an average of 10 mil a hour empire mining.
3. What's the most profitable highsec ore to sell? 4. What's the most profitable highsec mineral to sell?
Don't be lazy, peeps just don't hand it to ya on the plate you know their are plenty of mining calculators, spread sheets and a wealth of information in the sticky at the top this forum section, do the maths dude.

A hulk pilot is not going to make more than 10mil/hr mining in highsec. If that's all you want to make on that character, then fine, but the same pilot can make 40mil/hr or more mining in 0.0 and wormholes.
The roids in 0.9 and 1.0 are tiny, so the time you will spend switching to new roids will reduce your income. You need the larger rocks in 0.5 and 0.6 systems to get closer to the theoretical max yield. It's easy to fit a hulk to tank rats in 0.5, but then you become a more attractive target for gankers.
If this is an isk-making alt for you, then forget mining, train up manufacturing and trading skills. Log in once a day for 10 minutes and update orders and fire in a new batch of mods/invention jobs. The isk/hour for that kind of things is an order of magnitude greater than even the best mining in 0.0.
The same alt can then be freed up for other other useful things, like a freighter pilot, cov ops/prober alt, command ship bonus guy, etc. -- Terminal Impact is recruiting PVPers for fun ops in lowsec/0.0/wormhole space. Visit our website or join ingame channel "the tict pub". |

This is wrong. Quite a number of very valuable moons are in low sec.
However, there tends to be very powerful people guarding them.

1) Highsec mining is a lot better than lowsec mining couse lowsec mins suck. You do not want to mine in 1.0 or 0.9 couse the roids there are small, and you wonŠt find any ore other than veld an scordite (or at least very rarely). Go for 0.8 or 0.7.
2) A hulk can EASYLY tank any belt rat in highsec even if you are afk. Go and search the forums for suitable hulk fittings - there are lots.
3 and 4) there are numerous tools where you can do the maths for mining the most valuable ore at a given time. Look up local prices and you will know what ore you will mine.
Moon minng is a different thing as it requires a POS.
Hope that helps.

Yes the mighty trit buff that increased the amount of veld in high sec. Trit prices went from over 5 ISK/unit to 2.5 ISK/unit. Wonderful buff.
