Hello,
Fairly new here. Only my second day (not yet played) and I have some questions.
In the first day I've learned a lot, and gotten some help from a nice player named Rolly Polly. Aside from that I have a question regarding ships and mining.
I'm wondering what the best ship is for mining. I guess I'm looking for something with a larger cargo hold, more than 2 Hispot (or whatever they are caled) points and or maybe multiple lowspot points for the increased Cargo modules. Someone said on the newbie channel that I could use a frigate to mine, store the stuff in Containers, and then come back in an Indy ship to pick the stuff up.
But what I'd really like is something that does both. Or does that just not work? Are there any frigates or cruisers or battleships with large Cargo Holds and multiple Hi and low spots for module add-ons, plus I guess I need a lot of Grid Power and Cpu stuff.
Again it's only my 1st and a half day so maybe I just don't know something. So any advice is greatly appreciated.

The idea of a multi role ship doesnt really work as industrials (indys) have more cargo bay then the best of the best ships 'battleships'.
Mine in a frig for now, as your avitar is broken i cant tell what race you are so cant reccommend a ship to start off in but i used a merlin when i was a noob (being caldari) so find a nice safe sector and chew some roids. Then get yourself an indy and jetcan mine. Once you have a few more skills graduate to a cruiser (ospreys are a good start)
A indy is a must have (one load full of scordite and it pays for itself) i think the bestower is a good starting industrial so train for one of those and get hull upgrades so you can fit cargo expanders and you should be able to mine nicely using the jet can techneque.
industrials only have one mining laser slot so its not worth using them to mine in unless you go afk somewhere safe to mine hence the sugestion of filling up a container then emptying it with an indy.
Also i'd reccomend you getting the learning skills asap since these will decrease your training times for other skills.
i hope that helps you somewhat, im sure the majority of eve players are helpfull and will give you advice if you ask in the noob corp channel (except pirates but they are only "roleplaying" so you are bound to get ganked by one sooner or later, thats half the fun in eve )

Sorry about the avatar. I'm caldari also.
I'm currently using a frigate, the cheapest one with 2 hi, 2 med, and 1 low. I have two mining 1 lasers equipped and a Cargo Expander. But I'm curious about the Jetcan mining. Is that where you mine, drop output into a jetcan and then fly back and forth between the jetcan and the station cargoing the mined material from the jetcan?
If so, don't you have to worry about ppl coming along and swiping the jetcan? Or is there something else with those puppies?
Also, getting an indy looks like it'll be tough. Don't have the Caldari Indy skill at all, and haven't seen it for sale on the market for my station. Plus if it costs anything like other higher level skills, I'll be mining with my Frigate for months.
Not that that's an issue persay. I am looking forward to a game that has some meat. For my lighter fare I play Planetside, and having to think in a game again is kinda fun. But daunting all the same.
Thanks for the advice, and if you could elaborate on Jetcan mining I'd appreciate it.

Since your Caldari the Osprey is gonna be your best friend from now on.
Its a lvl 2 cruiser (I think) with 4 Hi Slots / 3 Turret Hardpoints. The Osprey class cruiser has a 20% mining yield bonus so with basic skills although your mineing with 3 lasers its doing the work of at least 4.5.
Youll also need to train up your mining skill so you can operate the T2 (Tech 2) Lasers.
Jet-mining is when you park your ship in the middle of some asteroids and start digging. When your first cycle is complete you jettison it from your cargo bay then open the jet-can its floating about in. Then all you gotta do is keep dragging the ore from your cargo to the jet can. Once the can is full you bookmark it go back to base then bring out an Industrial ship to haul it all in. Jet-cans dont stick around for long on there description it says the last for about an hour but id say its much more than that but just refresh it on the hour to be safe :)
Hope this helps you and welcome to EVE. If you need anything else you can EVE-Mail me.

Sounds like a Bantam. I'm still relatively new to the game myself (~3 weeks) but feel free to ask for advice if you see me in game. I'm usually on evenings Pacific Time. What time zone are you in? |

If you are going to stay solo, then yes, it will be a risk you have to take, leaving the jetcan floating in space and hauling back and forth.
BUT, as a solo player you can do better than mining, IMHO.
As a new player i made a point of only mining enough to get a decent set of guns in my noob ship (the minmatar noob ship is surprisingly usefull..). I got my first cruiser without ever mining, only by hunting NPC's. Back then it took me a whole month but now its easier, with mission agents being more useful. I only recurred to mining when i was finnaly able to get more money faster than by fighting. And that only happened when i got a Thorax with 5 miner II's.
If however you get into a Corp, your way is more or less paved at least into low end cruisers and Indys, as a rule.
The game has a lot of ways of being played. Find yours. And welcome.

Thank you all for the help, I do appreciate it. This game is pretty exciting for me. If you don't mind, I do have two more questions:
1) Bookmarking. How do I bookmark something so I can warp directly to it instead of warping 15k out, and sublight traveling to it?
2) Actuall I guess it's only 1 question. I have another post in the industrial section asking about building custom ships. Maybe someone here knows if it's possible to build ships and customize their Cargo space and hi and low slots? Or am I stuck with ships the way they are?
Thanks again!

first off on your first question on your jetcan right click and hit keep location. So then it's bookmarked. Then when you go to station and get your indy you just right click screen with your out in space and it'll have the book mark on the list of things that pop up and it'll probably be named "cargo container" just hit warp to 15km and your set. on your second question you are stuck with how the ships are but you can put different modules on that make the ship have more powergrid and more cpu and such and have better resistances to damage but in changing the look or what kind of slots they have no. And i have a good tip for you JOIN A CORPORATION it will help you 10 fold. If you need a corp mine is recruiting and if you eve mail me i'll will hook you up with a spot in my corp. We'll get you money, ships, addvice and fun. anyway hope this helps.

Bookmarks can be created within the "Peoples & Places" menu under the Places tab. I believe the button is called Add Bookmark. You'll need to pick the spot you want to warp to & move 15 km's past it. Keep the warp spot between you & where you are warping from. Stop there & hit the add button. Example: Warp from the station to the belt. Pick a spot that is close to an asteroid that looks pretty & move 15 km's past it, keeping the spot between you & the station.

Custom ships are not allowed in game. They have to be the standard ships the rest of us fly.

Thank you all for the responses. And thanks Magdala and Rolly for the convo's in game last night.
So I've decided that Indy shipping is going to be pretty good for me until the Mining barges come out with Shiva (assumption made w/o actual knowledge of Mining barges and their cargo sizes etc).
But last night I noticed I needed the Indy Skill, so I shopped galaxy wide and found a few, but damn(!!) they cost around 400k. Is there any way to obtain skills without purchasing them for that kind of Isk on the open market? Or is there an "easy" mob that drops Indy Skills as loot?
I suppose I could Jetcan mine until I get the 400k and then train to level 2 or 3 and then mine more until I get the 400 or 800k required for the Caldari Indy, but wow.
Oh well, I was looking for an involved game, and this is definately it.
Xazier: Thank you for the offer, but I am anxious to get more aquainted with the game before I choose a Corp to join. Although with the additions coming in Shiva, it sounds like I'm missing 75% of the fun if I don't join a Player Corp. So eventually I'll join, just don't know what my focus will be once I get aquainted with the game, so really I wouldn't provide all that much for a Corporation until that time anyway.
