Sooooo.... the socket closed error.... it's claimed by CCP to represent network lag only and not something they can do anything about.
So how come you get the socket closed error when trying to log into eve when the server crashes? Surely it's sorta obvious it's not just a lag issue when the server is actually in process of crashing? Once it's all the way down, you get "failed to connect" error instead but if you try to log in immediately after being booted due to server crash, you get the "socket closed" error. But it's just lag, completely unrelated to server side issues I'm sure.

Petition like the other few thousand who will likely lose ships. On another note, I also have an annoying sig.

Consider it a boss fight, u have to make it all back with a starter ship, civilian miner and a civilian turret. It will make you a real man

experiencing general internet issues. idk but heres some info the sola wind velocity it currently 346kps with a proton count of 1.80PCM3 (protons per cubic meter) however from a abnormally quite sola period the following has been announced by nasa:::
For the first time in over a very quiet solar year, the Sun as seen by SOHO is sporting 5 active regions (Dec. 22, 2009). The brightest regions in the extreme UV image are magnetic active regions. And the brighter an area appears, then we know that its magnetic energy is stronger. Two of these regions are associated with dark sunspots when viewed in visible wavelengths; the other areas have not developed into sunspots yet. This activity could signal that the long solar minimum is beginning to give way to greater activity levels, but we will just have to wait and see.

CCP: I just lost my Harpy to the server crash. Please ignore the killboard that says I was ganked like a deer in the headlights 12 hours earlier, it is a vile fabrication...

Shall I be the first to actually try and answer the OP?....fine then.
In Object-Oriented-Programming, a "Socket" is used to represent the connection between Client and Server. This socket can work in a variety of ways depending on the communication protocol used.
If the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is used, the server/client will be notified immediately when the connection is lost. If a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is used, the server/client will not recognize a lost connection until a certain time period elapses without any data being received.
Since I am not a CCP dev, I do not know exactly how the Client/Server is configured, but I believe they use UDP. If so a "Socket Closed" error could be the result of lag, because a certain amount of time has passed without any data received from the server. This will also be the case if the server crashes, since there will be no data to receive from the server.
I hope that answers your question. (^_^)

It's TCP all the way.

Dude, "socket closed" means just what it says: That the socket connecting you with the server was closed. It doesn't say why the socket was closed.
What they are referring to is the "typical reason" for this error to occur, but most certainly not the only one. If some construction worker blows up the network connection to your neighborhood, that's not even internet lag, that's brain lag. But the result is the same: The connection was interrupted and as a result the game closed the socket. Simple. -

Not to say the op has a point in any shape or from (because frankly I don't know **** about these technical things).
However I always wondered how I sometimes get the socket closed error on only one account while I have two online at the same time over the same connection on the same pc.
However iirc CCP upgraded the client with some functionality that monitors random disconnects. So they're probably working on a solution to the problem - if there is any hehe.
As others have pointed out though there may be more than one reason to produce this error - so it may be totally unrelated.
