Edited by: Bestofworst Worstofbest on 28/12/2009 08:03:48 Googling as I wait for replies:
Are there any experiences with reformating anyone would like to share? I'm planning on reformating my PC instead of trying to fix all these problems individually, and this will be the first time I ever reformatted my PC before and was wondering any advice or tips.
Wish I could reward people who've bothered posting with help for my problems.
I'm going to just Save Firefox settings and bookmarks and saved Passwords and a few videos I I've downloaded. ________________________________________________

firefox backup extention. Its a addon that will full backup all of everything.
Dropbox - sync something like 2 gigs of files through the internet, if you dont have a flash drive handy.. Or just dont want the hassle.
Patience. Reformating will take somewhere between 2 and 4 hours to get right, to a point where you are satisfied (and at that point is usualy when i go to sleep. I reformat stuff at like 3am)
A good TV show you downloaded onto a flash drive to watch. Seriously. Make that 3-4 episodes...
Oh, and a second computer helps, so you can tweet/facebook the entire process. OHGODS BELOW THIS LINE IS MY SIG !!!! SRSLY! Blane Xero > Lance is at -0.9 sec status with a 1 million bounty. Lance is also amarrian. Thats 3 evil points |

Get mozbackup (google it) to save your FF and Thunderbird settings/files/mail and you'll be good to go. Also having a separate drive (or comp) where you can transfer your important info, like files, docs, pron, savegames, will really help you.

I made a list of important programs I use so I can install them in an orderly fashion (and not forget what I needed..)
also save stuff on a separate hard drive so you can get things back faster.

I'm assuming we're talking some flavour of Windows here?
You might also want to consider downloading all the stuff you'll need after formatting. Things like offline ("network") installers for service packs (maybe the latest security rollup package as well). Optionally you might want to slipstream these things onto a new Windows CD/DVD so that they're installed automatically, it can make things a bit easier even if you only expect to use it once. On the other hand, if you haven't heard of slipstreaming then chances are it's not for you anyway. Just a reminder if it sounds familiar...
Also don't forget drivers. Maybe you use an integrated network card that just won't work without a proper chipset+network driver installed. You can probably imagine how that could end...
Personally I prefer to have pretty much everything I need on a separate partition or a DVD+RW so that I can get the computer up and running to 99% without ever going online, but that's just me.

Having just done a new install of XP Pro, there is always the hassle of re-installing all the useful programs...

The thing that always gets me, is that I forget to copy/backup something...
so here's a list, just add things that are unique to your install:
E-mails favorites/bookmarks savegames and anything else you have on your C-drive that you want to keep (screenshots from games, downloaded stuff, media playlists, documents, etc)
then write down what addons you are using for any programs that use them (for instance Firefox, or WoW(?)).. so you don't forget about installing them later.
then you boot up your computer with the windows CD in the drive.
hey presto.

I don't think you still need to reformat but my advice, and it has worked for me for AGES since the early 90's is to always have two hd's or if you cheap two partitions in the same drive. C: will always without any doubt be a small partition about 20 to 30% of your current HD capacity.
Now, every single time you install any game/pictures documents, **** you dont want to delete, do it in the D: drive, whereas your OS and swap file will always be on the C: drive.
You can reformat to your hearts content, and your important data will remain safely in there.
Bookmarks, saved games (in /mygames/my documents) and other assorted stuff that gets saved in the C drive can be easily backed up quickly using a wide array of free backup tools or if you are like me, regular copy/paste
Just wipe out the partition and reinstall a new one if you want to do it fast and reinstall windows. I usually do that every 2 or 3 years since I keep my system clean most of the time, I love ccleaner and Black Viper's page.
Also remember to install STEAM in the d drive ... most games will sync in right away, only a few ones need to be redownloaded from scratch.

Before i do a system wipe i make a backup DVD with several things on it.
Chipset/mobo drivers Video card driver CPU driver Soundcard driver Wireless driver
Avast Antivirus Installer Firefox Installer Flash Installer CCCP (collective community codec pack, comes with media player classic) Winamp Installer EVE online installer Steam Installer
Ping Plotter Installer Gimp Installer
Backup of Firefox bookmarks Backup of Documents (essays, letters, resumes) Backup of Wallpaper folder
If you can check all those off you have a good start on a new windows install.
When you install, what you should do is stick the Windows install cd in, it should prompt you through the menu system to a new install. It should also ask you if you want to format, and how you want to format. I personally believe in hard formats, rewriting all bits to 0 before a new install. This can take many hours depending on drive size. THEN you can install your OS.
The installation procedure is pretty much fallow linearly from top to bottom the above list.
