I don't know if everyone thinks that being safe automatically means you are bored. I for one have 2 modes of play: 1. I'm tired from a long day of doing crap I don't want to do. I want to sit back and watch my miners tear a rock to shreds. And 2. I'm tired from a long day of doing crap I don't want to do. I want to sit back and watch my mega pulse lasers tear away some griefer.
I'm just wondering if any pirates feel like safe can be fun, or if its a pretty universal feeling that the feeling of imminent destruction is what makes the game fun.

He mines in Yulai in a tanked apoc, uses giant secure cans and a shield tanked badger mark II. So ?

Yeh i know what you mean m8, i have 2 accounts so take last night for instance. I had a hard day at work so i never eve logged in on V2GBR as i didnt want the hectic role of hunting/ganking.
So instead i logged in my CAREBEAR and made some money as you said Killing some roids.
Sometimes it does make a change not to pirate all the time.
But tonight im ready to ease the hunger for loot :)

i quite like the odd minig session when theres a few of you to have a chat and a laugh and genrally not have to be constantly watching ure back...safe is a laugh when a few are about but solo safe has you seeing giant space squid in the end

*Cough* Take that as a big 'no'. I'm not really asking for me, since I've taken up agent running for the last few days, and I don't really mine anything except veldspar to keep up ammo supplies.
Edit: I'll take that as a no from the people I percieve to be regular pirates that have posted. The rest, its nice to see that I'm not alone trying to relax myself with this game.
I was just curious how other people feel, and whether they are playing in order to have fun by ganking people, or are relaxed by ganking, pirating, etc etc etc.
Cuz whats relaxing for some, isn't for others. I'm not moaning about pirating. (At least... I don't think I am)

Ehhh.... its pretty common. I mean, you see in any channel 'i hate pirates', or 'why do people think thats fun' or even 'miners keep the market going, and thats good' and people will ask where they mine and stuff like that.
But then, theres the other side of the coin. I saw in the ships trading channel today someone say 'i'm a pirate', and there were calls of 'i'm mining in such and such system, come gank me! ' and such. You know. It goes both ways, and there isn't much you can do but sift through and pick out the bits you think are relevant I guess.

Since a griefer spends 100% of his time PvP'ing he will always be more skilled at it than someone who does it 50% of the time. And I don't just mean skillpoint-wise, either.. There is such a thing as player skill in EVE.
I'm a relative noob myself but I can tell (and more importantly, FEEL) the difference in battle between a miner who decided to fit guns for a change or someone who lives by the gun. 
As for piracy and 'being safe' most pirates I know have a second account with which they mine, build and haul through empire.

Thats why practicing is fun and good. In a frigate tournament in my corporation, although there were not a lot of competitors, we all went all-out, and really learned a lot. For instance, a merlin with a whole lot of weird equipment (i'm talking nosferatus, energy neutralizers, MWDs) can do some really funky stuff to any ship.
But its still nice to just be able to mine peacefully. For me anyways. Only having fun while fighting just doesn't make a lot of sense. I agree that its exhilerating sometimes, but certainly not always.
