ok, starting to get a bit hacked off now but I think it's 'cos I don't understand something. I've been playing about 2 months and have mainly been out frying NPCs in my Caracal. I'm trying to get on with missions and am not getting anywhere. The ? is should I change coorporation and if so why? I'm still in the school of applied knowledge. Will this make any difference to my status re missions? I'm still where I started at 1.03 caldari standing after about 80 missions

that's really strange. Normally your rating should increase for every mission you do, no matter what corporation you're in.
Maybe put up a petition to the devs ?

First off buy the skill called Connections. Train it to level 4 asap. This will give your standings a rather pleasant boost. Also, if you didn't finish the tutorial missions, do them too. Next, decide what sort of missions you want to do. If it's combat you are after then there are a few good agents in the Nourvukaiken system. Show info on the Caldari Navy, click on the agents tab, open each department and choose an agent that is available to you. Just call in at his station and 'chat' to him. If you get stuck, give me a shout ingame. I do a LOT of missions!

you loose standing everytime you reject a mission so be careful not to reject many if you reject any at all.
and the social skills are a huge help to standing increase, you will want them all at level 4 if you plan on doing a fair bit of missions.

Also, as far as I know, all of the "academies" (y'know, newb corps) usually give you mostly courier missions, because they're all staffed with "advisor" agents. Sure, they'll give you the occasional kill mission, but not like the amount you'd get from a security/internal security.
Kill missions are nice because you can usually finish them so dang fast compared to courier missions, which means yer getting more bang for your social skill buck per hour. Well, imho at least.
The only thing really good about the academy corps that I can think of is that they give out memory implants (at first, at least).
Once I get an implant, I start working for another (npc) corp (so I can get a different kind of implant). I don't think you can join a different npc corp, you just sorta... y'know... work for them. The caldari navy didn't seem to mind that I was in the gallente federal navy academy, fer instance. Well, they sorta messed up my faction a little itsy bit but they ended up liking me a lot more than they made anybody else hate me, and it's easy to make it up to the guys back home.
Corporations don't like you more for killing different kinds of pirates, but factions do. If a faction likes you, the corporations that are a member of that faction will like you a little more, and the agent thats a member of that corporation will like you a little more, but they'll like you a LOT faster if you do missions for them. So if you been flying around asteroid belts killing pirates instead of doing missions to get a specific corp to like you (which is what it sorta sounds like you been doing), that's gonna be REALLY slow sailing.

Actually, I've found Advisory agents give about half courier and half combat, at least my agent for Hedion does. So it's a nice balance. The only drawback is you don't get as many implant missions as courier agents give. I've only gotten one ever, while other people in my corp get a couple a night.

I recently came back to EVE after an extended layover... I dont think I ever completed any tutorial missions? Is it worth my while to go back and do them? If so, how would I contact that agent?
Thanks!!!

It depends how far you got before you left, but i'd say yes, completing the training missions will give you a 1.0 standing with your faction (very handy) and a +1 implant.
To find your agent, take a look in your character sheet, standings tab, liked by, and there should be the newbie agent listed there.
