Hi All,
Is it worth using more than one missile type during combat, depending on what you are trying to break, swapping mid way?
I dont mean changing missile types depending on opposition (like never using Kinetic against the Ishkur) I mean using anti-EM missiles first of all to break the Shields, and then swapping to other types (Kinetic, Thermal or Explosive) to break the Armour?
I hardly ever fight against Caldari ships, so I`m not coming up against much EM resistance built into opposition fits.
Doing some basic calculations, I found that it doesnt always pay to stick with Kinetic, even though there are damage bonuses, but I dont want to find out the hard way that 10 seconds without damage whilst I change missile type outweighs the advantage of using the "correct" missiles.
Can anyone speak from experience on this?
Also, what is the feasibility of mixed types? Maybe half of the launchers permanently on Kinetic, whilst the other half do EM or the appropriate damage type for the situation?
Cheers.

I'm assuming you're talking solo combat here? If so I'd say it's very dependant on the fight at hand. If you're having a hard time breaking a tank, and assuming you can tank the incoming fire, then looking for the resistance hole can be worth it.
As a rule of thumb, if you don't have to change damage, then don't. If you do then a good time to do it is just before your launchers run out of ammo, you're gonna lose 10 seconds anyway so might as well make it count.
The only time I've gone into a fight with multiple damage types loaded is in a gang going up against something particularly tough. At this point gathering info on target resistances can be of practical use to the gang.
The best option (if at all possible) is to load the right ammo for the target on the way into the fight, knowing what you're warping in on, and having a reasonable idea of hoiw it's usually fit is a big advantage.

It is rarely a good idea (unless, as the other guy said, you're forced to reload anyway) because un-tanked HP goes down so quickly that it really doesn't matter what damage type you're doing. Why waste 10 seconds reloading so you can kill 1000 un-resisted shield HP a bit more effectively when the ship is armor tanking with 10,000 heavily-resisted HP and active reps? ----------- FREE ABATHUR - HAVING GOOD 0.0 IDEAS IS NOT A CRIME.

My two cents, go into the test server with a buddy and try it out.
It'll give you a better idea of what to expect with that tactic without actually risking your assets.

Against T1 tanks you can stick with pretty much whatever you had initially loaded, as its all omnitanked anyways. Against T2 resists, you should immediately swap ammo to the resist hole. In gang combat its not as big a deal, pick something and run with it unless your hitting problems on a particular target's tank.

Best time to change damage type is before the fight and you see what's he's got.
In rare circumstances (Shooting Kinetic at Gallente T2 as an example) should you change damage type in combat. Resists are usually pretty balanced out, so losing out in 10 seconds of DPS won't help you much. *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

What Artemis said is pretty right on.
Tech 2 ships embrace the highest resistances in one type, and if you are unfortunately fitted with the wrong type of ammo at the start of a fight, either warp off, switch ammo then try to re-engage, or switch right away at the start of the fight while you guys are targeting each other.

IMO if you must switch...
change one launcher at a time when the first is reloaded then switch the next and so on, that way youre firing the whole time
now before someone says "the fight might not last that long"....... you didnt need to switch if thats the case

In that case you're losing out on even more damage than if you did them all at once, since each launcher is still down for the same amount of time, and any unchanged launchers are dealing reduced damage while you wait to change them.

in a 1 on 1 situation (which happen all the time in eve ) I would run with each damage type in my launcher; that way after initial engagement you can see the resist hole and 'plug it' with your missiles.
This is really only effective where its a battle of tanks and the one with the most cap will win (thus doing an extra 30-50 damage per missile will eventually break even)
With a 10 sec RoF and the resist hole damage type doing an extra 60 damage per missile using a raven as an example, this will take approximately 2 minutes of firing to break even and from there you will be in the green.

Changing missile damage types is a no no on a missile boat unless you fly a Khanid ship. Why? Because Caldari are chained to kinetic damage. They should have a damage bonus to ALL missiles (imho) but they do not.
As such, eat your kinetic and like it.
Hope this helps. Patri

Fit each launcher with different damage type missiles, wait to see which one deals the most damage (if the target is armor tanking break his shields first then compare). Then load up on the missile dealing the most damage.

So you'll either be hitting his highest resist or his lowest, 50/50 chance...I like those odds.
Or just load against FOTM....so amarr, armor tanking...load up on expl.

Actually it depends on if you engage t1 or t2 ship. Thing is: if you engage t1 it doesnt really matter much which damage type you do. Most t1 omni tank so if you hit at 70% or 50% is no biggie. But when you enter t2 ships world suddenly having pre-loaded explo or EM does world of a difference. Why? Caldari and gallente have explo/EM as lowest and 2nd lowest resists. In case of minmatar explo is their 2nd lowest, for amarr EM is their second lowest. So when having loaded EM or explo you have 1/4 chance to find enemy who has racial resist vs your damage type. If you load kinetic or thermal its 3/4.
