(tl;dr provided in bold at bottom of WoT)
I'm trying to do the scanning/exploration tutorial. I've managed to do the first 2 parts, mostly through luck, as my first scans gave me 100% accuracy scans on the sites I needed so I could warp right to them.
Now comes part 3. My mission is to find a magnometric(?) training area, warp to it, grab some crap, then hand in the mission.
I'm given a tutorial about how to use the scanner with probes, which I follow to the letter, and it only gives a very, very basic explanation of how the scanner and probes work. I take the tutorial again because, as it's my first time doing this, I don't understand it much. I get it a little more the second time.
I begin scanning, and find a magnometric site. It has a 47% or so accuracy, and gives me a red circle, which indicated that the site is on the fringe of this circle somewhere. I bring out all 4 probes and position them so that the overlap covers the entire red circle where the previous scan said the site is, and scan again. I now get a reading of 2 sites, both with the same accuracy. This confuses me. I do some googling. I find out that one of these sites is real, and one is fake. I pick one, and scan. Magnometric site disappears from my scan entirely.
I spend another hour and a half trying to find this magnometric site. I get the scans to 99.99% accuracy and a tiny red circle telling me the area is SOMEWHERE AROUND HERE. I set my probes to the smallest scan range I can while still being able to overlap the scans all around the red site. I scan. Magnetometric site disappears from the scan altogether. I pull a clump of hair out of my head in frustration.
How the hell does scanning with probes work!?

You are in luck, sir. CCP recently made a tutorial video on how to scan down sites. The youtube video can be found here.
I also made a scanning tutorial video too. It's a little more advanced, but I like pimping it.
Learning how to scan in EvE is difficult to explain verbally. Tutorial videos really help. ___________________________________ "In the land of predators, the lion does not fear the jackal." -Dexter |

First thing, don't give up. I had the same problem with that mission the first time I did it. Took me three days to find the site.
My big problem was moving the probes around. I fat fingered some of them so they were no longer in the same plane as the target. When I looked at them from the top, they looked fine. When I tilted the screen so I was looking along the plane I found that the probes were nowhere near the target.
It's almost impossible to explain, as mentioned above. You just need to didle with it until you get a feel for it.
Also, if you lose the target, move the probes back out and increase their range again.
The second time I took the tutorial, with a different character, it took about 10 minutes to do the magnetometric.
Keep in mind that real world scanning is notably harder than the tutorial.
As I said, don't give up. Forget the bonus and try it a few times a day until you get it. And I bet you will get it.

sounds like u jumped the gun
as u get smaller and smaller with he scan range the accuracy goes up, but at a higher range ur accuracy can be pretty far off
so as u get closer ull see the site shift, because at the higher ranges ur accuracy could be as far off as a whole AU, if u get a dot and go straight for the smallest range to pinpoint it then it'll probably look like its disappeared because it was actually a AU to the left but u didn't narrow it down yet

Sounds like you were too close with 2 probes, so they both returned a 1 probe result. Next time drag those 2 away from each other bit by bit.

What did you do after your probes were way out of the plane? How did you reset them after you saw they were way off?
Thanks

Thank you so much.
Those videos have helped me understand it so much more than the built-in tutorial ever could.

Edited by: Adehlea on 02/01/2010 17:34:23 The way I scan a system is :
- Zoom the screen out so that the whole system is visible - Press and hold the LEFT mouse button, so that I am looking down on a flat view of all the planets etc (X/Y) - Launch my 4 probes, check they are at 32AU range, and move them (by dragging on the top visible surface of the square) so that there is one probe on or near every cluster of planets. - Hit Analyze
Decide which sig I want to narrow down.
- Reduce the scan range (shift+left click + drag the probe radius circle) - Zoom in the screen a bit, so that the new probe radius is about the same size as the previous level - Move the probes so that they form the arrangement I like around the sig dot - Hold left mouse button, and rotate the screen so that I am now looking at the system in profile - Adjust the probes Z position if needed - Hit analyze
Repeat as needed.

another noob at scanning here
i seem to have found an unstable wormhole and signal strenght is 99.99%, while im at 0.25AU range and probe is centered at the dot. WTF? How can I get 100% if im already using the smallest range?
if I use more than 1 probe it still says 99.99% or sometimes I get 2 results and 50% each, other times 2 results with 99.99%. WTF

You cant always get to 100% if your skills / ship arent good enough.
As far as wormholes go, I can get 100% on them most times at 2AU, but sometimes I need to go to 1 or even 0.5 -- just found an M555 Hisec to C4/C5.
So, I would guess that if you cant get to 100% its because your signal strength isnt high enough - use sisters launcher / probes and/or train Astrometic Rangefinding, or use a ship that gets strength bonues to scanning.

If you're getting a single dot result (not a sphere, circle, or two dots) you'll need a little extra boost then you should try to position your probes on all sides of the dot.
Namely, what can shoot a 60% to a 100% (true story) is just making an equilateral pyramid around the dot. You don't/shouldn't put them in too close either. Not because they "interfere" with each other so much as due to the nature of the deviations can cause that pyramid to miss the mark. Farther apart = bigger pyramid = better chance to get the true position within = ??? == Profit! (Interesting note on interference: at .25 AU, there's almost no chance for interference.)
Also, looking at your post a little more: You are using all four probes right? Four probes is the downright minimum in all cases.

To get your probes back into the plane, tilt the map until you are looking along the plane, zoom in as required, and use the top and bottom arrows to move them up and down.
Don't ever use less than 4 probes. 5 if you have the skill.
