Mary Lane	Posted - 2010.01.04 15:52:00 - [1] So I have a situation I wanted advice on. I recently found out over Christmas that my character's name actually emulates the name of a King who is associated with the N a z i Party as well as the Fascist Party under Benito Mussolini. My great grandparents were Italian and were taken by Mussolini's equivalent of the N a z i SS in the mid 1930s and were never heard from again. Over the holidays I was with relatives who asked about my hobbies. I mentioned EVE and told them about my character. Upon finding out the name of my character, they were very displeased and gave me the short history I listed above. I contacted a GM and politely asked for a name change citing these reasons and was denied stating that the name doesn't violate policy. Here is the naming policy taken directly from here http://www.eveonline.com/pnp/namepolicy.asp: ◦Reflect, glorify or emulate any real-world group or organization, terrorist society, criminal elements, discriminating organizations or their leaders and figureheads. This includes the use of names of real-world military, political or religious groups. So does anyone have any advice? I replied to the GM and politely but firmly informed him that the name does indeed violate the naming policy, on many levels, and that if he is unable or unwilling to help I would appreciate discussing the matter with someone who can. This really makes me sick and unhappy and will cause me to leave the game because I am not rerolling a 2+ year old character that I am otherwise very happy with. I did not post with my main because I don't want it to be made public. Ironically enough I can't even post the word N a z i without the forum automatically covering it up, yet I can have a name of an individual whose actions led to the deaths of millions.

You picked out the name, or thought it up, or whatever, but it ws your own idea to use the name that you used. It must have seemed like a good idea at the time? It must have seemed innocent at the time? You obviously did it with no malice or ill intent? So, now, you've gone and gotten yourself an education, and what do you learn? Lo and behold, your previously innocent and benign name is now offensive and repulsive? GET A GRIP. It was fine when you picked it, it is fine now. There is someone, somewhere, guaranteed to be offended wby whatever name you pick. As long as you didn't set out to pee in someone's eyeball, then just let the thing go fer pete's sake. Some people have skin so thin their brains fall out.
