Ulitmately, the Goons took advantage of an unintended consequence of an existing game mechanic. I'd feel sorrier for them if they found it, told CCP, and then they got slapped for it. Instead, they found it, screwed it six ways to Sunday, then told CCP, forcing them to slam the door shut so no one else could take advantage of it while they laugh all the way to the bank. CCP had to take action, otherwise everyone else would start screaming "But the Goons got away with it..." every time someone abused a game mechanic. CCP has had trouble following laundered ISK in the past, so it's not totally unreasonable for them to confiscate ISK and assets during the investigation (provided that the investigation is over very soon). We don't know all the details, but if they literally confiscated EVERYTHING, not just assets involved in this FW deal, then that does seem a bit harsh.

They tested it to its limits so they knew what they needed to tell CCP. If they just said "oh we noticed this" CCP would slap a band aid on it....then another band aid on the next problem and the next likely opening up more problems because of a lack of understanding of what the real issue was since we've been shown time and again that CCP doesn't properly test and review the things they add to the game hence the need for more expansions like Crucible to fix all the screwups. So the goons made some isk, who cares the goons can make however much isk they want when they want, why punish them for for doing CCP's job.
