o/
I grind null sec anomalies in a paladin for isk, during which time I usually salvage and selectively loot on the fly for the corp.
Until recently I've gone exclusively with pulse lasers, reasoning that they hit hard out to about 40-50k and track better than beam lasers, which is great because the tractor beams max out at 40k. However, most ppl in corp say that its better to use beam lasers, so I thought I'd give it a try...
With multi-frequency crystals there's no doubt that beam lasers do more dps out to a longer range, but I'm finding that I have to start killing stuff from allot further away so now I'm loosing out on salvage. Where as before I could hit cruisers and frigs up to about 10k away, now with the beams I struggle at under 20k.
All in all beams don't seem to be any better, they certainly don't earn bounties any faster as I have to use my drones to kill the smaller ships allot more, which ofc slows things down. If I try to compensate for this by warping in at longer ranges then I loose out on some of the salvage and have to use longer range crystals which drops the dps...
These are my thoughts atm, and admittedly its only after one night of testing.. So during a few quiet minutes at work I thought I'd post here and ask what others have found and why they use one over the other..? I use a single tracking comp atm, is it worth fitting another with beams? or perhaps swapping it out for a webby?

Never flown a Paladin, but I did mission in an Abaddon forever it seems :p
I used mega pulses exclusively for a long time because of the tracking/damage benefits, and if something was out of range I kept long range ammo in my hold.
One day I saw a fit that would allow me to fit tachyons, so I did for kicks. I noticed that the tachyons did supremely awesome damage per volley, and that their range seemed infinite. BUT, the ROF was so low that the actual DPS sucked. Then there was the added problem of hitting little targets, the heavy fitting requirements of beams, and the wrecks being so goddamn spread out..
So after a few days of disappointing performance from the tachs, I switched back to mega pulses and never gave it a second thought.

Edited by: Neamus on 06/01/2010 14:46:08 I tried beam lasers for a while and came to the same conclusion, pulse work much better for PvE.

Apoc - pulse with the range boost but tank is a little thin.
Abby - pulse has fewer cap needs and my Abby is nowhere near cap stable. Pulse also have the damage edge inside 20km, are on a par to 24 km, then suffer out to 32km (Tach AN optimal) where Scorch takes over, assuming 3 AN HS for pulse and 2 AN HS + grid mod for beams. If you are blitzing missions or have a salvage alt in a plex, you may still want to shoot beyond Scorch optimal which takes you back to beams.
Pally - Tachyon all the way cause you have the grid to still fit the HS. Never bother to change xtals, just use ANMF when they hit 40km for your tractors. When they get in close, the 90% web is enough to make even Tach tracking work on cruisers if you fly directly away from them (you did fit a faction web, right?). Biggest drawback is that you can't fit an AB if you need to actually drive around within a room. --- Some days you are the pigeon, and some the statue. |

Edited by: Threshner on 07/01/2010 04:24:26 currently in a low sp and tech apoc
i just started level 4's about a week ago and have been having a easy time with most. The only thing is that my dps is really rather low (note i am still low sp and cant use tech 2's) I have been wanting to try a pulse set up but am kinda scared to try without scorch's. Is it still worth getting some cheap pulses over my current beams?

Pulse on an apoc are pretty good, but personally I'd wait until you're able to use tech II and scorch before making the switch. Pulse with scorch are very good, but without them they lack dps.
