Please excuse my ignorance on this. I am in the process using bootcamp to load XP on my Mac Pro. It is asking me to partition my hard drive. I understand partitioning, however with bootcamp will it delete everything on my hard drive like a typical partitioning would?
Or is this a different process that will keep all my work, OS and programs intact? The documents apple provided does not really answer this question. I do not want to spend hours reloading all my applications and files, tracking down serial numbers etc.
thank you

It won't mess with your Mac files. Just make sure you install the XP onto the Bootcamp partition. Just beware that doing any kind of partitioning 'can possibly' mess up your files. (thats what they say to cover their butts, just in case)

Backing up is always a really good idea. I'm very glad I have an external HD for that purpose.

If you are using Snow Leopard, you may want to google about Bootcamp support. I thought i read something about BC not supported on SL, but I think that was just for Windows 7. |

Apparently, Bootcamp does not officially support Windows 7 as of yet, but I have been running Window 7 under bootcamp with no problems. They do, however, support Window XP and Vista.

I have been running xp on my mac with bootcamp for over a year now. The partitioning caused no problems for me, just be sure there's plenty of free space on your hard drive. I would allocate around 40-50 gigs to win xp, this should leave over 200g free on most machines. If your hard drive is less than 250 gigs plan accordingly. Once installed the mac will always boot into the mac side unless you hold down the alt/option key during startup. I have run both tranquility and SISI on the xp side with few issues. Enjoy!

Thats not entirely true, the mac will boot to whatever drive youve set as your startup drive. If thats windows xp, itll boot to windows everytime you restart. You will get a control panel for xp that lets you choose your startup disk just like you woudl normally through system preferences.
While it is nice to boot into xp, i find it rather frustrating that the first 30 minutes after leaving the sanctity of Mac OS is spent updating XP.
Not to mention its seriously perverse to boot xp on the mac. as someone said in game "its like eating **** with a silver spoon"

My experience. I had to reformat my drive because bootcamp couldn't install because of unmovable files. So I backed it up, reformatted my drive, installed bootcamp, xp, ran all the updates for xp, installed eve. Best tweak for eve I ever made, the mac client is crap due to the wine emulation. The difference is night and day, no jittery lag, no random crashes (yet), no graphical glitches. Until they come out with a proper MAC client, one that does not depend on emulation, bootcamp is your best bet. Go for it!
