Hey everyone, I'm new to this game and only know the basics, but I want to make a good build for a cruiser, battlecruiser and eventually battleship.
What faction should I go for and what skills and possible fittings/ships?
It will be mostly for PVE. Thanks

Edited by: Kalnov on 10/01/2010 06:12:35 Post a fit you think will suit PvE adequately and we will critique it.
Here are some tips:
You want to use specific hardeners You want to choose between passive or active tank. Active is more damage, but reliant on cap. Passive is not very good on the battleship level except for the Rattlesnake and few others. Active tank means things like Medium Armor Repairers or Large Shield Booster. Passive means lots of shield extenders, invulnerability fields (or specific hardeners) and shield power relays. Choose what race you like. Each race tanks and damages stuff differently. You want to be near cap stable if you are inexperienced. When you become comfortable you can do what you want. You want to tank one type. I mean armor OR shield. Not both. Use the other slots to boost your tanking or dps ability. Never hull tank, except some rare ships in PvP (Taranis comes to mind as the only one I really know). You generally want at least one damage mod. More is better. A damage mod is like a Gyrostabilizer or Ballistic Control Unit. Make sure to only use one type of weapon. For example blasters and rails. Never use both blasters and rails, pick one and stick with it. Gallente have the best drones (like Hobgoblins). Minmatar are pretty good too. The rest aren't worth using. This does not apply to sentry drones. They're all good in a way.
I left off a lot I'm sure.

For PVE - a Caldari Missile specialist is the way to go Level 1 Missions - Kestrel w/Standard missiles & AB to range tank. Level 2 - Caracal using Assault Missile launchers and Large Shield extenders to provide a phat passive buffer tank level 3 - Drake with Heavy missiles & passive Shield tank with Core Defence Purger rigs. Level 4 - Raven with Cruise Missiles and Active Shield tank.

With a ridiculously low number of skillpoints you can get into a caracal and run level 2 missions and then train up your support skills so that you can properly fit ships.
Sweet, alright, I'll go Caldari then. Also what support skills are a necessity/must have ?

Wow, thanks alot for all the advice. I don't know alot about making a decent fitting so I really can't come up with anything other than big guns and maybe a shield booster, I'm still reading the wiki's on most of it.
And for tanking, should I tank Armor or Shield (Caracal/Drake/Raven)?
And for skills/certificates what should I go for?
Thanks!

For Caldari, go shield tanking. Fact of EVE forums: They will always come an anounomys alt-toon and question someones character...only fools buy into anything a forum alt says though... And yes I am an alt :) |

Specialize in missiles, shield tanking, and Caldari. When you decide you want to PVP you can fill some great roles as either basic DPS or a specialized ECM boat (Caldari have best EWAR in the game).
You want to go Kestrel -> Caracal -> Drake -> Raven.

Alright, that sounds good, I eventually want to get into the PVP side of the game with these ships, just got alot of learning to go. Are there any fittings I could see that shows what a shield tank looks like?

I know this is going to sound bad, but how do I shield tank? for the Caldari ships mentioned above.
Right now I'm getting all my learning skills to lvl 5 and secondary learning skills to 4. And those are all the skills I have.

Edited by: skye orionis on 10/01/2010 17:00:37 Here's my quickstart guide for caldari noobs - 1) start in space, and do the in space tutorial, you'll get some items 2) 2 the 2 part 'Endless battle' tutorial in your noobship 3) open help and look at the career path agents, set destination for the system with the agents and do all the missions.
Ok so while doing the noob missions train Caldari Frigate from 2 to 3 Missile Launcher Operation 1 Rockets 1 Afterburner 1 Shield Upgrades 1 Hull Upgrades 1 * Weapon Upgrades 1 * The last 2 are given in the 10 part tutorial missions, and you'll get some other skillbooks (e.g. propulsion jamming) that are probably worth training if only to complete the tutorials - these are just the minimal skills to fly a kestrel. These skills should take less than 10 hours.
That'll let you fly a simple shield tanked kestrel: Minimal Skill Kestrel 4x Rocket Launcher 1MN Afterburner Small Shield Booster Magnetic Scattering Amplifier (swap depending on enemy damage type) Ballistic Control System Nanofiber Structure (or overdrive?)
This will burn through most lvl 1 missions with ease - use this to learn to control range & capacitor control. You'll have to orbit at around 2500m with your afterburner on, you'll take damage, pulse the booster to keep your shield about 30%, watch your capacitor, if it drops below 30% then stop orbiting and put some range on the bad dudes so you can regen your capacitor and shields. If things get really bad warp out. Repeat and rinse.
If you want to invest in this setup then train energy grid upgrades to 2 and fit a Micro-Auxillary power core and put standard missile launchers on that fit to give you much longer ranges.
4) After doing all the noob missions sort through your stuff, sell whatever you don't need and head off to 'Arnon' to do the sisters of eve arc. The arc has about 50 missions and pays pretty well, but you'll want to upgrade to a cruiser for the later missions so the training plan for this is.
Caldari Frigate from 3 to 4 Caldari Cruiser 2 Missile Launcher Operation 1 to 2 Standard Missiles 1 Drones 2 Scout Drone Operation 1
And this will let you fly a caracal with a big fat buffer tank that recharges quickly enough to fend off most damage, and lasts long enough to kill most things causing it.
Caracal Low SP Mission Runner 5xAssault Missile Launcher 10MN Afterburner 2x Large Shield Extender Magnetic Scattering Amplifier/Heat Dissipation Amplifier (again switch depending on damage types) 2x Ballistic Control System 2x Hobgoblin
That'll get you through the sisters arc while you train learning skills. Now, find some nice agents and run missions to make some cash while you wait out the training of other learning skills. Don't do level 3 missions until you train more ship skills and can fly a battlecruiser.
Now you might also look through the skills for sale on the market in the missiles/engineering/electronics/mechanic section - train up anything to level 1 that sounds useful, all those little level 1 skills take a few minutes each but provide little boosts.

dont bother to much with those. it's just plain boring for a new guy to push his learnings to 4/4 or even 5/5. just skill the basics to 2-3 and then start workong on spaceship/missile/shield skills while doing L1/L2. test the kestrel with rockets/standards then the caracal with even more range, power and tank. as you can fly L3s push your learnings to 4/4 and learning itself to 5. then plug in a +2 or +3 set depending on your success and you are set to skill towards the drake. also dont forget the support skills like energy management, navigation skills. you should have the important support skills at 4. just read the descriptions and think about what makes sense for you.

Yeah that is true, I really don't have anything to do since it is all going towards training, I will bump the last level of the skills back a few days/week. I've also got the +3 set installed now.
Thanks!
