I don't know if this has been discussed before or not, but it would be REALLY cool if ships had locks on them, much like locks and alarm systems on modern vehicles. This being 23 millennia in the future and all, I find it hard to believe that something that costs about 1 billion ISK can be flown by anyone other than the owner.
For example, say I flying my trusty Thanatos around doing cap warfare with my alliance. Shortly after reinforcing POS's in our current operations area, we decide we're done with the caps and want to do a bit of roaming. I have my roaming ship in my ship maintenance array and decide I'd like to jump out of my carrier and fly around in my pimped out command ship while leaving my carrier in the shields of an alliance POS in a hostile area of 0.0 space.
Here are a couple of scenarios that concern me:
While I am out on my roam, it is possible that a spy or an opportunist could take my expensive ship all because I couldn't "lock my doors" or secure my property as I could with any modern motor vehicle.
Also, while I am out on my roam, I could die and get podded and have no way of returning to my ship. This presents other issues like, if the ship were locked, did I think to have a "hide-a-key" somewhere for a corp mate to pick my ship up for me? Or, why are clone vats only for motherships, hell, they don't use em! They should come standard for every cap ship, that way I could return to it if i died on my roaming scenario.
I dunno, I know this might sound like a stretch of a wishlist, but there are so many of us that fly caps now, its just stupid to assume you could leave your cap ship at a POS and expect to see it again as yours. If cap pilots can't do anything else but be stuck in their cap ships when disconnected from their home systems while on the front lines of war, the game starts to feel severely limited. If we could lock our ships and change to other ships in space that would be extremely cool! What are your thoughts? |

i like the idea even tho i cant fly a cap(wish i could) make it password protected like a can but have it when it gets to hull it dos and anyone can get in it then. also Concord would not come and save your ship form attack scene know ones in it. and make it a passive mogul hi slot that enables the ability.

my ship as 500MW lasers, 1400MM atrillary cannons, lasers that can slice through kilometers of rock or seperate a solid traitanium bar from the wreckage of a ship.
nukes are pocket change.
i laugh at your locking mechanisms.
on a more serious note, if you leave a carrier floating in space with no pilot, you deserve to loose it. finding and taking ships left floating in space is a legit profession. i found an abandoned freighter once. locks are arbitrary, remove responsibility and would kill a legit and fairly profitable sub-profession that is one of the most exciting in the game (holy crap i just found a nighthawk!).
how about no?

I'm sure I mentioned a POS somewhere in my initial writeup. I'm certain there are others that read this that have run into the same situation of being on the front lines in a **POS** and want to switch ships, one that very well may be in the belly of your carrier. Its a simple security feature that ensures, within reason, that you will have a ship to come back to when you return to the same --****PLAYER OWNED STRUCTURE****-- that you parked it.

good idea, i am currently stuck in a carrier while a roam is on going and i have a hac in my belly. SIGNED

you need to have a carrier and be involved in cap warfare to understand the OP

Don't be greedy. This is a disadvantage of cap ships. Have a station or a pos nearby/handy to switch ships. Locking a ship is a stupid idea. ___

though sadly i cant fly caps yet myself i do agree with this. noteing that he said you where at/inside a pos to do this means the area should be sequre. why not make it like a 5 minute anchor thing where your "locking all the space windows" but only inside a pos bubble and only for caps. it does seem stupid that you own a 500M-2B isk ship and yet it has no lock on the door.
however this should only be a pos thing as if any pirate worth his weight in titanium found a pilotless ship just floating in space , pretty sure he brought door cutters to get in.

If something like that would be possible. I think you need to be able to hack it. With the already existing hack module.

I don't think you get it... The system and all surrounding areas are hostile (including stations and their services...). My alliance comes to your space and starts blowing up stuff. We anchored a POS as a temporary base of operations. My alliance has killed or scared away all of your cap ships but we still need caps in the area to assist in logistics, etc. I want to be able to jump out of my cap and into my ship that I've brought with me and kill more of your friends and possibly you, in a ship that uses gates... I like the anchoring idea, but just a simple lock of some sorts will do for the cap I'd be leaving behind temporarily.

As any cap pilot knows, most of our alts are for getting us around and posting in forums , not blowing up ships. I have a large investment of skills in my main to see fireworks with an assortment of ships that I'd like not to be bottled up in my carrier stuck in one system...

Leave it in corp only pos. If you can't trust your corp - change corps. And thats one of drawbacks of being in hostile so get used to it.

Solutions:
- fly carrier with an alt (best choice)
- put carrier in a station
- put carrier in a (capital) ship maintenance array (well, if you have acess so have others, but tbh, they could steal your roaming ship from your carrier aswell)
Thing is, if you cannot find a safe place to store the ship, then something is obviously wrong. Also you sound a bit like your confusing a carrier with a mobile mini-station.
Also what your suggesting would end up in thousands of not-used ships on poses floating in space, which is generally bad.
Btw, clone vats are available at rorquals too.

most long term capital pilots either have an alt for the capital, or one for subcapital stuff, and as soon as you hit supercapital you need one of those anyways.
