With the insane amounts of threads like this, and hacked accounts in general over the last few months, i dont for one second believe they are ALL because the victims bought isk or clicked the nekkid girly links on the forums.
If it takes time, fine, but maybe instead of making music videos about HTFU, you should be DYGDJ and spending 30 seconds to shoot an email off to your customers?
edited cause i cant spell.
Before your head explodes you might try reading what the dev a few posts up linked. Nobody at ccp has said the account was actual breached only that "customer Support has to take preemptive action when accounts have been accessed by IPs frequently used by hackers". Meaning that a known hacker IP address tried (or maybe succeeded) at accessing the account and they have temp banned it so they can analyze the isk and item trades on the characters. If they find transactions with RMT farmers then he gets the ban stick if not the account is released and life is good (with the exception if lost training and frustration).
I for one would much rather CCP be overprotective of me and temp ban my account as soon as isk farmers try to get into it as opposed to logging in one day and finding my hangers empty and all my isk sent to gfdhsj or his friend yshsgl.
On a side note CCP would you please stop referring to them as hackers!!!! Hacking an account would mean that they accessed an accounts assets without logging into the account IE an exploit that let them into the database or some other method. isk farmers are guessing poorly formed passwords or tricking dumb users with key loggers or impersonations but I doubt they have ever broken into an account without having the password. On the other hand everyone has there own opinion and you can feel free to disagree with my sig.

Does CCP update your skill queue for you while you're banned? I'd be pretty irritated with 2 weeks of no skill training...

No they do not....and furthermore they do not reimburse you for lost subscriptiontime.
Had 2 of my accounts banned since the 29dec "pending investigation" and on this friday they answered that a senior GM is going to take a look at shortly and yesterday ive got them unbanned.
Got back the ISK the bastards made while selling my stuff on the market but not any faction/deadspace module or ship that went away on bogus contracts
So 1,24Bil for having played since -05 feels not so nice. But i¦ll try to keep calm and petition that aswell and see what happens.

you miss the entire point of this thread, its not the banning not the account security its the total lack of comunication from the dev's that is causing the frustration. and the time frame is totaly unacceptable by any industy standard.

It is sad. The ISK sellers have changed from a semi honest work ethic to a purely criminal behaviour. And as with most crime, their profit is way less than the cost to their victims. As in, the amount of real $$ they are making is a fraction of the $$ being spent to combat them, and fix their damage.
I personally have long suspected that the Gold/ISK sellers, at least since Everquest started, were mostly criminally funded. It is an almost untraceable way to launder large amounts of small transactions and make a little extra with "legitimate" customers along the way. Same goes with most spam operations as well.
Events like unholy rage and the general negative publicity Gold farmers are getting makes hiding the laundering among the dwindling genuine transactions that much harder. Thus reverting to the more overt criminal behaviours we are seeing now with hacking and keylogging was no real surprise to me.
I don't think the current keylogging and hacking is actually a way to make money more than it is a way to tell the owners and operators of these MMOs that if they don't acquiesce and allow the farming operations to continue they will do everything in their power to destroy the game or at least the game developer's reputation.

A corp mates account was compromised and the corp wallet emptied. It has been almost 2 weeks and my corp mate has received no responses other than a survey for how CCP did on the petition (that they never responded to), Corp also has received nothing back.
CCP if you know what these IPs are block them... This could be done in code or on a firewall. Use a system similar to a bank and lock a user to an IP. If they login with a "foreign" IP send an email to the user and verify that the new IP is correct. |

They'd use a proxy.

No idea how it's done in the rest of the world, but over here the vast majority of ISPs uses a dynamic IP-pool. Basically, my IP changes every day. I don't want to reply to a CCP mail every day to get some questionable amount of extra security . If they got my password it's because they managed to get a keylogger on my PC. If they managed to do that, they might as well add a proxy server to their keylogger and login through my PC, to get the correct IP.)
I wouldn't mind paying 5-15Ç for a login token though :) -

Im all for CCP taking proactive action and protecting my account if a hacker tries to access it, that isnt my issue. Its the insane length of time and total lack of communication that is the issue, and there is no excuse for the lack of communication. The length of time would be a lot less irritating if people knew wtf was going on, though tbh 2-3 weeks is just insane. If youre that overworked, HIRE MORE CSRs. Space is fun! |

Thanks for the heads up Abrazzar... I tend not to read the stickies since they never change. Guess that isn't true outside S&M...

Edited by: Natasha Nikolaev on 12/01/2010 20:01:23 ok so I have one of the automated responses that got sent out after they "fixed" the goof Fallout is talking about, and it says "Use this password to access your petition:" but fails to say what to put for the username.

My buddy is approaching Week #2 as well. He logged onto EvE once after the New Year and has been banned ever since(Same ban Message). No response at all from CCP.

I believe CCP stated that they were blocking/suspending account based on IPs or other unusual behavior. If they are able to detect it after the fact they should be able to prevent it as well. I'm not talking SSH tunnels, port forwarding, or proxies.
Your IP probably doesn't change but the NAT address does. Even so this is a limited block and could be accounted for. While you do have a good point about the malicious proxy, all I will say is if there is a will there is a way... |
