Will a totally passive tanked (0 cap usage) drake able to tank 973dps to weakest resist be able to survive entire room aggro in most lvl 5's?
Do rats/towers in lvl 5's ever switch targets?
What I'm getting at is can a crazy passive tanked drake go into a lvl 5 (thats located in high sec) and gather up all the aggro and keep it while my alt warps in to kill everything? A buddy claims the rats will switch targets and take out my dps ship. And he claims that 1k ish dps tank isnt high enough. Is he right?
Just wondering before I drop a bil isk on impants and complex/faction mods. Sure would be an expensive mistake...
Oh, and since the alt (tank) has crappy missile skills, would a bunch of defender missiles help any with incoming dps?

1)You should be better of in a nighthawk or a tengu instead of a drake 2)Mission rats don't really switch agro, however, be careful of your triggers 3)If your missile skills are that crappy, consider just dual farming lvl 4s instead.

Edited by: King Rothgar on 12/01/2010 07:19:24 Rats don't change targets but there are typically many spawns and they of course don't always target the same thing. I'm not sure if your tank is enough but it might be. I recommend a carrier in low sec but a drake/nighthawk would probably work if setup right. I know people use a nighthawk for them pretty often. The tengu is also a popular choice. -----------------------------------------------------

You should be ok, but you would need a decent dps ship. Or, alternatively, you do what a friend and I do. You have the meat slab that is the Drake warping in first and taking all the aggro, then I warp in with my Rokh with 4 'Arb' Cruise Launchers and 4 Large Shield Transporters. I help dps with drones and launchers, he tanks and does the most dps and I help him survive anything large.
Be very careful of triggers (or the Rokh will get scrambled and bent over), try and stay alligned, be careful with your drones and if you are in low sec keep d-scan open for probes.

For most of them, you won't ... if you go omni-tank. Full room aggro - which always happens, can mean anything from 1500 dps to 4000 dps. Add to this the webbing and you might have a problem. --- I smack just for myself. Allow faction cap boosters to be traded via normal market ! |

1) It always depends on the individual mission. 2) Ships never change aggro. Your DPS ship could take aggro from new spawns, but if that happens just warp out before they scramble you or kill frigates first & fast.
If you did it, you would be much better if your DPS ship had 125m3 Drone bay to use for shield repair drones.
Even with the drones repairing, depending on the mission, it could get ugly. Ideally, lvl 5 missions are run with a passive tank, logistics, and DPS.

Edited by: Dakhath Ebonheart on 13/01/2010 02:57:19 Thanks all for the replies. My alt is very good dps, as well as sporting a shield transporter. I have experience of only ever doing a single lvl 5 mission and in that case the only thing killing my capacitor was nuet towers. As long as nothing is killing the cap on my dps ship, i think i will be ok getting a little aggro. I think 800ish dps from main, maybe 200 dps from meatshield will down enough NPCs to get the incoming dps to a manageable level before I run out of cap boosters.
Do the NPC ships ever nuet, or is it always nuet towers? And do more nuet towers spawn in any second/third waves?
And are defender missiles a waste of a launcher, or are they effective?

There are L4s with neuting ships, I don't see why there should not be in L5s. I suppose a mission web site will tell what you are going to face...
As for switching targets, it can happen for 3 reasons:
- New wave. Many missions spawn new waves and it's possible for the second ship to aggro them (i.e. they spawn and that ship is in their aggro radius or for other factors).
- Special ships. I found some rare missions where there are "diversely named" ships that seem programmed to chase after drones, typically destroyer class NPC ships. One of them happened to target my salvager alt (in a dessie herself) despite her being right at the entrance and the NPC being closer to the mission ship by far. These ships can be present since you warp in (so it's not a late spawn randomly targetting stuff) and they tend to chase passive attack drones even if they were launched after the spawn all aggroed to the missioning ship.
- Distance. I noticed that if I aggro a spawn and then kite it far enough (say 100Km) and then enter with an alt, 1-2 of the aggroed ships will turn back and go attack the alt.
All of the above in L3-L4s, I don't know how much this applies to L5. - Auditing and consulting

GL tanking in that active armor tank ishtar when you lose 80cap/s in most of them. Read the thread before replying next time, it's only a few messages anyway.
