Why bother? They will use it to get more booze and food and multiply even more. Money send there is wasted, just like what happens when you send money to africa .. wasted on food and people multiply instead of fixing their problems.

And you wouldn't if you suddenly found yourself homeless? I hate hippocrates
And Haiti isn't really known for overpopulation on account that most people there don't make it to 25 due to the gangwars that are constant over there.

I sympathise with them, and I understand that the devastation is pretty horrific.
However, I'm having my own difficulties right now as are many people in my own country. Whilst I am glad that my government is in a position to help, where did they magically find ú20m($32m) in aid in the middle of a recession?
They say charity begins at home, but that money could build a couple of homeless shelters and fund lots of projects to get people off the streets and clean them up so they can work for themselves, get their self-respect back and contribute to society again.
I really don't want to come across as heartless here and I do understand how hard things are over there, but does a government not have a responsibility to help it's own citizens first?

Sending a small donation might not seem to make a difference, but saving even just one extra life will mean a heck of a lot to the person who's life is being saved and his/her family.

You raise a fair point, but Haiti has never really had what you could call a government, not a stable one at any rate. It is also one of the most poorest nations on the planet.

I really do hope that the selfish, racist, and generally bad people in this thread get a chance to spend six days pinned between two slabs of concrete with broken limbs and no food and water. Then the UN can refuse to help you and watch you starve to death.
People like you weigh the fecking world down, we would be better off without you all.

Why am I a bad person for wanting to help the disadvantaged in my own country?
We are in the middle of the worst recession in decades and with an election coming up, all the parties are vying to say how they would cut public spending and try to bring down the deficit.
How then have they magically found an extra ú30 million to send to Haiti?
I appreciate that the money may do a lot of good, but where is it coming from when the government can't afford to build new schools and hospitals and is having to slash the science budget.
I'm willing to bet that they are borrowing the money and that means more that every UK taxpayer has to pay back in the future and I'm sorry, but I'm not OK with that.
If the money is coming from the international aid budget that has already been marked for this year then that's fine, but not if it's new borrowing.
Quote: People like you weigh the fecking world down, we would be better off without you all.
Who says that I don't participate in charitable giving just because I don't agree with my government giving ú30 mil to Haiti?
You might think you would be "better off" without me, but I can promise you that there are people in my own country and my own community who would be worse off without me.

Instead of a donation, just buy a box, put some money in it, and set it on fire.
You'll get the same results.

I was gunna avoid posting in this thread until i saw this post.
First off its ironic your condemning people who are refusing to send aid to people in haiti when i vewry much doubt anyone in haiti contributes toward global food aid or charities.
Also i like how your implying that its the selfish people that dont make the world go round and ensure that you have a job and a comfortable life and that selfish attitudes and the competition resulting from such attidues hasnt resulted in most of the modern day advances you take for granted like the internet the computer and improved healthcare.
But its ok you keep imaginging that if you bail out every country in need while ignoring problems at home everyone will be ok because you are so nice and friendly no one will ever take advantage of your condition and siphon off billions of dorrahs for stupid tribal conflicts and increasing populations up to the extent where more food is required.
People like you are the ones who would rather donate money so they look kind and considerate rather than make the tough choices nessecary to continue life and allow you your relatively carefree lifestyle.

It's selfish to point out that decades of sustained economic, food etc aid have failed to transform haiti into a semblance of a civilised country, and that sending even more money and aid is unlikely to accomplish anything beyond fuelling corruption?
No. I'm not doing this out of selfishness. I'm merely pointing out the truth. The people who think they get to feel righteous for having done their duty by donating $5 to some corrupt dictator or another are being selfish. --------------------------- Only those who surrender are lost |

giving money to oxfam is one of the best and secure ways of giving aid. Better than just any random charity or volunteer organisation.

Seems irrelevant to the current situation, as people are asking for donations which will help specific organisations to provide specific earthquake related help.

wow alot of people getting their knickers in a twist
firstly i gave Money because its human nature to help others secondly those that are saying they are being called out for not giving donations (nothing wrong with that and there is nothing wrong with you)
lastly the only people that have issues are those that are complaining about others not giving support and those *****ing about why they should give anything.
