Looking at the stargates you can see that there are windows. Does this imply that there are folks living in the stargates? Probably a stupid question but I thought I would go ahead and see what you all think. Eleknar |

As far as I know, stargates are essentially highly-specialized manned space stations according to canon. They have crews/maintenance teams and such.

According to the Description of the Deklein Region and the Empyrrean Age Book, Stargates are operated by at least a small crew. The Gates also not only act as Portals to another Stellar System but also as communication relays.

What they said.
From what I've read in PF, Stargates are crewed. Each one operates like a small station built around a huge artificial wormhole generator. They also each serve as a link in the FTL (faster than light) Communications array that covers most of New Eden, so they can transmit packets of data from one system to another and track capsuleer pilot movement.

There is also an EON chronicle about a Caldari stargate crew, though the official take is that old EON chronicles (before they start/started to review these) are fan fiction if I remember correctly.

Much like others have mentioned, stargates do indeed have crews.
They perform maintenance, work the communication network, monitor all jumps between systems to ensure safe travel (when a jump is initiated on one end, the other receives a signal to let them know a ship is coming).
The biggest thing to remember about stargates is how they function. People need to be there to direct the traffic because unlike what we see in game (stealth-jump-appear, usually some distance from the gate) is that for it to actually be possible the ship would need to be within the gate, propelled, and caught by the sister gate. And let's face it, you need people around for that. Think of it as a security guard monitoring and controlling traffic at a check-point. - - - Aloriana Jacques - Skill Sheet

The Peralles Incident
Here is a reference from one of the EVE Chronicles that mentions a crew on a stargate. Kinda creepy story to boot. "There's more than one side to a story..."-Reporter for the InterCorp Courier Enterprises |

So there are kinds of Ghost-ships caught in the hyperspace between the gates. Really Creepy!
A bit like Warp-space in the Warhammer 40k universe, were all kind of nasty creatures are lurking

Actually with the changes to dominion Sov, it is the Soverenity Holders who pay for the stargates in 0.0 Lore wise.

One of the Eon mags has a very good story about the crew on star gates. It also has reference's to how gate travel makes living things aggressive and it's not the first little reference to how gates might effect the mind. ______ How to Passive Shield Tank T2

i have always figured people lived on the gates, but even for their great size(a stargate if my estimates are correct make even a titan look like chickencrap). the crew might hit 100 or so, ATC and Engineering crews. my guess is nobody can dock at them unless they are authorized crew/engineers. their immunity to attack may not just be for game function but maybe due to the raw energy they generate+ the rip in subspace keeps the station slightly out of phase. i have sadly put much thought into the daily operation of the system.
outbound gate: Ship is cleared to enter the initial gate structure(and maybe pay a toll) and control is handed off to a gate control engineer Gate Control scans the ship to get accurate current mass(my guess is this is where ships are lost, miscalculation and the gate doesnt apply enough energy to get the ship to the destination gate) signal is sent to ship computer and engines, warp drive and weapons shut down. control completes calculations and ship is accelerated into "gate space" Destination gate is prewarned of arriving ship and clears exit point of traffic, ship exits and restarts primary systems. my guess total time is a minute or two from structure entry to being "sent".
day to day upkeep would likely be keeping the power generators running, radiation shields around the waveguides up, and the sensors that scan ships at perfect accuracy. a lax maintenance on the gate likely causes the losses of ships.
also appearing at random spots with in 15km of a gate is imo a game mechanic, my thought is ships would enter and exit the gate itself as id guess outside of large convoys gates dont have 1000 ships at them like the George Washington Bridge Toll Plaza piles up cars. and large convoys would make reservations for an off time so they could get sent through one after another.

Oh, jeez, a stargate breaking down would be no bueno. I could see gates breaking down all the time in Jita. Those crews must be run ragged. Where ever light travels, it finds the darkness already there, waiting for it. |

i bet repair issues are what cause things like that Perelles Incident, one figures that a single thing going wrong can determine if a ship reaches destination. and i am sure the gates are rather old. but i tend to think that in lore they are not as backed up as they are in the in game Jita. and id bet they stop taking traffic while the vital systems are being fixed up. and how mentally stressing is that job, knowing one screwup and bam you vaporized(well maybe, we dont really know what happens to lost ships do we?) 6000 or more people depending on what class of ship got fried or lost or whatever happens in a gate accident.
now the real mystery is how populated is a gate, and are they fully run by the Governments, Concord or some not yet mentioned by CCP "Agency".

makes one wonder, if there is a ship that ahem doesnt arrive do to whatever. is it always reported or do these things sometimes get swept under the rug. i figure the guys running the low sec or nullsec gates may just blame the underfunded remote hardware because most of their isk for a new Mass Bosen sphere so they just have to keep the current one going on spare minmatar parts.
