What if Smartbombs had falloff to them? It would be more realistic, since the farther you are from the blast, the less force there is!
If your 5km smartbomb had a 2.5km falloff, it would make them both easier to use and more powerful! Smartbombs really dont get much use in general and they could use some work.
There could also be skills which effect smart bombs, such as lowering the cap they use or having a skill to give them more range or whatever!

Area of effect weapons are computationally heavy. This would make them even heavier.

Smartbombs have plenty of great use. Blasting drones off you in PvP is great against Gallante ships, and incredibly usefull for getting rid of pesky frigs' in missions.
Or those battleship NPC's that all go 'Ramming speed!' into your ship. Just dont be like me and always smartbomb your own drones.
Can smartbombs still kill incomming missles? Maybe im mistaken.
I suppose a little bit of splash damage would make since, like 25% of the regular damage.

Rancer smartbomber reporting in, they are working as intended, and very well.
Maybe they need a little damage increase following the HP increase of ships back in 2007 and the recent rigs additions. Which gives small ships better tanks.

Would have too insane of a range on capital ships

Currently: Check; Is ship in range? yes/no Yes; Apply damage. No; Do not apply damage.
If Smartbombs had falloff: Check; Is ship in range? Yes/no Yes; Apply damage. No; Check; Is ship in range +5%? Yes/no Yes; Apply damage -1%. No; Check.... ... ... No; Check; Is ship in range + falloff x 2? Yes/no Yes; Apply Damage -99.9% No; Do not apply damage.
Having multiple ships in smartie range can already lag things up pretty heavily, imagine how bad it would be like this. --

Jacob, that's an appalling way to calculate falloff damage, it would never be done that way.
What you'll actually have is three cases:
In Optimal - apply 100% damage In Falloff - apply damage according to a simple formula that achieves the required falloff curve Out of Range - do not apply damage
Yes, the falloff option is potentially slightly more computationally expensive, but nowhere near the huge chain of logic checks you proposed.
Though if you did insist on going the logic-check route, even that can be made far more efficient by structuring them in a tree form - so each check would cut the remaining range possibilities in half:
Is Over 50% range: yes: is over 25% range yes: is over 12.5% range No: is over 75% range yes: is over 87.5% range
etc
Yes, the tree as a whole will end up containing more logical checks. But any individual range will follow a single path down that tree, and only need to evaluate the checks down that path, resulting in considerably fewer checks than your approach.
Personally, my suspicion is that the most computationally expensive part of the smartbomb operation is calculating who is a possible target, and the range to all those possible targets. Which you have to do whether or not you are applying falloff. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |
