When fighters were still on the drawing board and motherships (The old one) were too, the idea was for them to launch hundreds of small fighters, as can be evidenced by their models: they're proportionally small to their supposed cruiser-sized damage (you can see a little pilot).
But the need for speed killed that idea, and now we only have 20 being launched by supercarriers and 10max by drone boats (formally 15)
What if the new Moms got the ability to launch hundreds of tiny ships, providing a visually cool and unique weapon for what's been a comparitively hard class to find a role for?
My idea to prevent server overload is to split up the hundreds of tiny ships into a max of 20 groups. Each group has a damage, sig radius, and hp proportionate to how many of the fighters (faar more appropriate to use the term with these guys) is in the 'swarm'. As a fight wears on and the individual swarms take damage, their sig radius, damage, and total possible HP takes a hit (sig radius being good).
The 20 number is merely a max, you can just lump all your fighters into one huge swarm, but with corresponding sig radius hit.
Combine this weapon with some of the other cool ideas, like a projecting, temporary forcefield, temporary cyno jammer or stargate shutdown...and I think you'll have a really unique class that will add flare to upper tier fighting.

Why not simply leave them as they are, in terms of game mechanic, but change the rendering client side so that each fighter just looks like some sort of swarm formation...
Then, cut down the number of rendered ships in the swarm as the HP decreases, and have reinforcing ships decloak as the HP increases.
Simples.

So when the swarm is damaged all the clients have to render the 'new' swarm? This is pointless, it's why ccp introduced skills like drone interfacing. ___

It has merit from an aesthetic perspective, but functionally all it's doing is penalizing a drone's DPS as its HP gets depleted. I say leave it as it is. My main complaint is that a fighter drone is faster, hits harder and can take more punishment than a frigate. It bugs me that a Templar outperforms an Executioner. ======================
