I realize that this could be a great idea, since I have been glitched into a sort of first person view in my ship as I was undocking my ship, I quite like this view and think it could be refined into a good idea with the right operations done to make it possible. There could possibly be a full view of the battlefield looking through a window of some sort, acting as the captain and a chance to see the interior of a ship, of course there should be an option to switch back if somebody so chooses to do, yet I think this would be a great idea for many players of EVE. Thanks, GigaWare

no reason not to have mounted cameras on the ship that you can switch between, and maybe pan and tilt...

For anyone who cant be bothered reading the backstory:
Then, all of a sudden, a bright light filled his eyes and a sound like rushing wind filled his ears. After few seconds the light dimmed down and Pirkotan was able to see, but everything became deadly quiet. And what he saw made his stomach somersault. He was looking at the Okarioni from the outside! It was as if he was floating in space maybe 100 meters from the ship. "Can you hear me?" a voice said. It was Anu. Pirkotan tried instinctively to speak, but his mouth was again filled with the fluid and only a strangled croak emerged. 'Hello?' he thought. "Hello, lieutenant Pirkotan," Anu said. "We can hear you. The communication link in this demonstration capsule is automatically open, normally you control whether it's open or closed. We are monitoring your progress. Can you see the ship?" "Yes," Pirkotan replied, simply by thinking about it. "Yes, I can see the ship. But whose eyes am I seeing through?" "You're viewing the ship through a camera drone. Think about moving. Try to move to the right. See what happens."
This in mind...... why cant we have a camera on the front?? just in case we are missing those days where we used to have legs and just wanna remember what space looks like from the bridge of our ship again... |

Additional camera controls would be handy for cinematic purposes. I suspect the OP is looking for more of a roleplay angle, a view from "behind the wheel", which is absurd for the reasons given by others.
I'd like a bunch of new camera options, including binding the camera to the ship's heading. If nothing else, we could use it to reliably aim a 5-degree scan at our warp destination. I do not, however, want to see a blinking control panel with a big see-through viewport above it. I'm not flying an X-Wing here. ======================

I m kinda wondering WHY the heck they had to sink us poor bastards into a jell-o.
Also, I m kinda inclined to question the prolific use of windows and traditional sci-fi ship design if it s not utilized.
Ah, the crew you say! Well, why arent those poor bastards immersed into jell-o as well? Why do we een need a crew? Is the jell-o for high g maneouvering? For accomodating the neural hookup in some pseudo scientific non-beleivable mumbojumbo fashion? Isnt this the age of super sci-fi science and gadgetry magic? Anyoen ever heard of nano sytems? It isnt hard to extrapolate from this emmerging technology, what would be considered unbeleivable impementations of technology today, into the future, and clearely see that those implementations would replace the human mind and hand within the blink of an eye once they become available.
Imagine the vast life support systems they could get rid of on the ships if they excluded a crew from the deasign! Imagine the ammount of mass they could get rid of and instead increase the ships accelerabtion and overall ability to maneouver through that reduction of mass. Or, use all that freed up space inside the ships to store more ammo, more horsepower, more of everything!
Bah! Everything sourrounding this issue is just so arbitrary. Why not rework the entire concept from the ground up and be consequent about it.
Remove the windows on all ships! We dont need them and they cause a lot of headache for the background story.

We need the crew to clean up the mess after we get out of our pods. Also to do things like move cargo about and maintenance etc. The ships have inertial compensator's that they are needed for warping which was developed before the pod tech on introduced in the 4 empires.
The pod is a sensory deprivation tank, the jello stops us moving around and is also a source of nutrients for then you spend 36 hours on a mining op. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Edited by: Wastelander Miccey on 01/02/2010 19:26:13 To reply on the Backstory. In a remote station "Pirkotan" thought he heard voices. The men and women around him as he was laying in the canister buzzed about and worked like bees. Suddenly he saw light, light?? I must be dreaming. No, open your eyes and take a deep breath. The dawn of man begins "again". Anu "SPOKE" in words to him!!
And then comes "walking in stations" and "landing and walkin on planets". Update Done

We aren't normal humans, we're capsuleers. Unique training and cybernetics allows us to use a capsule/pod to pilot a ship. It basically allows us to use the ship as if it were an extension of our own body... There is no steering wheel, no keyboard... It's all in our minds. This gives capsuleers an edge over traditional starship captains... I'm sure you've seen mention in mission text from time to time - someone indicating that a capsuleer is needed for a mission.
The assorted windows and whatnot are for the regular crew of the ship. The ship is not completely automated. Somebody needs to haul the cargo aboard and store it properly... Somebody needs to load the weapons... Somebody needs to fix the air conditioner when it breaks down... There are hundreds if not thousands of normal humans aboard our ships.
I agree that "walking in stations" would be nice... And it would be nice to be able to walk around our ships as well... And some additional, cinematic camera controls would be nice...
But, from a roleplay perspective, you'd have to be crazy to get out of your capsule aboard a ship in space. The reason we can resurrect in a medical clone somewhere is because of the capsule. No capsule, no immortality.

you guys all bring up really good points, and i think we can include and take out some parts of it but i think we should still at least have an option for first person view

Well, I think everyone would be happy if you could get a view "from the bridge", but if your ship was destroyed while you're in that view option your character is deleted. Problem solved. ======================

That's an awful lot of development time you're talking about. And imho it's all for a short-lived new sensation before you go back to something more practical, like.. zoomed out gameplay.
The only purpose I can see where this might be interesting and useful is half-afk mission running where it keeps you from falling asleep. But I'd rather make missions more challenging than implementing a screensaver for carebears.

For first person view, turn monitor off.
But seriously, you're floating in good inside a unlit capsule. There IS no first person view, your mind is directly hooked up to the ship.

Personally I wouldn't mind having a pod view camera. I've got so many windows open I can barely see my nice ship as it is anyways. eh.. rather have CCP working on dual monitor support before this imo.

This can already be done.
'look at' your target, and pan your view to your ship. Launch a missile. When you can see the glowing dot fo your missile Right click it and click 'Look at' I've done it before. Shame i can't add them to the overview though, It's a pain in the ass trying to right click on a missile traveling at 4500m/s

for general EVE game play no, but for some kinda "camera ship" that ccp could issue to specific people for filming things in game i think a totally steerable platform that was first person would make for some interesting footage and flybys.
