I don't like 'em.
In games such as UO or EQ whereby your character was completely specialised, it was often necessary to create alts to experience all of the gameplay variety that you wanted to. In AC it was actually *essential* to create an alt if only to store all the stuff that your main dude acquires.
In Eve, I feel alts create more problems than they solve. Since your character (with the required amount of time spent) can turn his / her hand to just about everything, there is no real need to make an alt. You can even rectify low sec. ratings, with patience and persistance.
If you only had the one character, you'd feel a lot closer to them. You'd care more about what happened to him / her. A lack of alts means that you'd also have to take responsibility for your actions. No more emptying a corp wallet, looting cargo or other nefarious actions before passing on the loot and deleting your character.
As I think there should always be a chance of payback for nefarious actions, a lack of alts would allow for nice, healthy vendettas and the like.
Once more, just my tuppenceworth on the subject. ------------------------------------------------------------ Bulk Paint Lost In Space |

I see no problem with having Alt characters as such, somtimes you might want two separate characters to do different roles or even just one as a main and one as an explorer.
CCP have made sure that only 1 can get trained at a time so if you wan't to split your training time, go ahead.
I do NOT like the ability to create a character, rip of a corp and then delete the character with no comebacks at all - This needs to be addressed I think. I mean sure, rip off a corp but then there SHOULD be some consequence to doing this - deleting the character seems like cheating to me.
I think the CEO should be able to request the 'reletives' of the character who has just ripped off his corp and is then never seen again!

O boy, you're opening a can of worms the size of a football field, remember Dune?
This has been discussed before and there have been many flamfests accompanied. I think its far too late to remove alts. They should have done it at release if they were going to do it. If you force people to lose their alts now you'll have a mass exodus from this game. The population is not that big now so imagine if that happened.
There are ways that were discussed on other threads about how to control alt use, one of the ideas presented was a timer for switching characters. Something like 3 days before you could use another alt or something like that.
SWG's Beta has gone the single character per server route for now, seems to be working well. What would eve have been like if we could only use 1 character? Who knows, SWG and Eve are Apples and Oranges respectively. |

You guys aren't thinking outside the cube. Alts are very useful....extremely useful. Even if all they do is just drive you other ships around for you.
That alone saves you 50% of flight time.
Alts are very useful in conflicts.

Yeah I have two alts. Both have specific purposes to save my main a lot of travel time and enable me to do some things I couldn't do with just one character. I like the convenience. ___________________________________________

I have an alt that is a supporting character for my primary. My primary mines in his cruiser and my alt takes the ore in his indy back to base and refines it. I have two accounts on two PC's that is how this is possible. This also allows me the ability to not split training time inbetween the two characters. I really enjoy having an alt because it makes the game more interesting for me..

useful purpose for alts: posting stuck petition when you can't log in your main dude. They're necessary people, cause you know, stuff happens.

Husband, Father, bread earner, handyman, landscape gardener, plumber, cook, painter, decorator, plasterer, activities coordinator, gopher, taxi driver.
I find that having an 'alt' allows me to enjoy the game more by reducing the length of time it does to do anything, as you can see I do other things that require my time and input.

A lot of the exploit issues, in the abscence of alternate characters, could still be done through multiple accounts.
If I could rip off a corporation of 10 million ISK and then sell it on eBay for $50 then spending $12 on an account is still worth it.
The way to tackle it is reduce the exploit, or remove the reasons for exploiting in the first place.

I like having alts in different regions so I can quickly look at market data for trading without having to actually travel to three different regions. ------------ Ashen Black

My "alt" is just my second "main". Sure, things go slower building two characters, but I don't mind really.
They both are completely different. If I feel like shooting things and playing tourist and not want to be sociable, I play one. When I want some company and mine the hours away, I play the other.
The third one will solely be a back-up for one of the characters: hauling things around in a big ship.
I like Alt's.

I find the use of alts to be slightly strange and don't use them myself other than for posting petitions when totally stuck, but banning them would be going way too far. The problem comes when they're used for exploiting - eg gain trust, stealing, transferring then recycling their character. I mean how many suicide-bomber corporate spies are there out there? Maybe all their grannies need operations or something? I know someone who lost 75M that way.
The solution to this would be some way to identify characters that are probably alts. A good way to do it would be to show what % of skill points belong to that character out of all the ones in that account. This wouldn't stop people using alts but would stop the stupid suicidal corp spy stuff - unless the player was willing to live with the consequences or sacrifice a substantial amount of skill points.

Not a great fan of alts here, for one reason in particular...
Scouting and Recon.
There're are no modules to let you see out of a station, see what's at the next jump gate, scout for prices outside your current region, track the location of your next victim, hunt for rare 'roids...and the list goes on.
Why aren't there modules to do this? Because players are supposed to co-operate to achieve this! It's too damn easy otherwise. Where's the risk \ fun element of heading off into 0.0 space in search of Bistot when there's no self-preservation instinct for the character doing the searching?
I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who use their alts as "proper" characters, but the "Rules Lawyer" use of them sucks in a most childish manner. - Carp Riddell - CEO, Innsmouth Shipping - Proud Member of Curse Alliance

It seems most problems with ALT's comes from someone creating one, doing some nefarious deeds with it and then deleteing it. What if you could see the age of a PC when you check its info, just the age in months/days/hours would enable people to be more suspicious of dealing with a character that is 1 hour old, but flys round in a vexor.
