Solo L5 missions in minmatar carrier is it possible? If so what's the likely fitting considering I hear that there are neuting towers that drain your capacitor. Failing that can the battleship only ones be done in a maelstrom?

You can do it, but you probably wont finnish it in the carrier. -

Why do you want to go out in a carrier to do level 5 missions if you can't assemble a fit on your own?

Actually, while the tone might be a bit abrasive, he has a very good point: if you don't know how to fit a Carrier, you're not ready to fly one. If you don't know what is needed for L5s (and why), you're not ready for them either. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Stupid question really. I haven't done a level 5 therefore this is why I'm asking of the more experienced players for a few pointers. As you don't seem to fall into that catergory please refrain from silly replys.

Edited by: Contralto on 06/02/2010 19:05:56 A word of caution, mention "how to" and Carrier/Dread/any uber ship in the same thread and the Leet will pop out and grief you. You are supposed to join an alliance and be apprenticed to one of them until you can come on the forums and snipe at impudent nubs yourself.
Try asking how to make boosters or any other hi level activities, guarantee the same response.
lvl v's can be done in a Carrier solo easily, But without support in Low sec, in open space you will be guaranteed to receive unwelcome guests at some point. Not all missions are accessible due to acceleration gates. In fact any solo attempts at Low sec Lvl V's in any type of ship will be very risky.
To counter the nuet towers you will have to rely on the carriers large cap buffer and take down the towers as fast as possible. Perhaps 10 sentry drones to avoid the travel time of fighters.
Solo BS is a problem, due to their poor passive tanking ability and large sig, I have no experience with it, but the new Rattlesnake looks like it could do better. Add a second ship and the picture changes a lot. 2 or 3 RR BS are an optimal team.
If you want to solo, a passive Tengu or Nighthawk is your best bet albeit painfully slow, even then you will have to have max skills, Deadspace tank and a knowledge of the triggers. I wouldn't advise anyone to try solo lvl V's without a lot of prior team experience. Friends or alts.

Not so much that, but at least pay attention to stuff and know how to use Google. Capital ships take such a long time to train for, and are so limited in their uses, that you don't just jump into one. Rather, you should be encountering situations that you think would be better handled by a capital, considering various concrete hypothetical capital fits and assessing whether this is a feasible plan.
It's not that one needs to be omniscient - for example, if someone asks "how well do fighters track BC rats in practice", that's a reasonable question and deserves helpful answers. Likewise if they ask whether two heavy neuts are likely to let them escape from pirate tacklers, etc. If someone asks "how much DPS do I need to tank in level 5s", that's a tolerable question - they really ought to know about sites like EVE Survival (or be able to find them very easily with Google), and be able to add up the incoming DPS of the spawns - but it's not that ridiculous and at least shows that they're gathering information from which to draw their own conclusions.
However, if someone simply asks for a fit (as opposed to asking for a critique of a fitting they've come up with themselves), for a capital, that's ridiculous. If you can't even come up with the absolute basics of fitting a mission ship (oh, I don't know, let's have some damage in the highs and some tank in the mids/lows accordingly) - after all, a carrier is essentially an oversized Domi/Vexor but with DCUs instead of guns - then the others are right, that you just don't have the nous not to lose it immediately. It also shows that they're being lazy, wanting others to do all the work for them, which doesn't make me inclined to help them and is further suggestive that they're going to get lazy and lose the ship.
So yeah, if it's a legitimate question asking for help on how to work things out on their own, that's fine and I'll give helpful advice. If it's asking for things on a plate, especially when the querent gives reason to assume they are very clumsy at handling plates, that's a different matter.
(Incidentally this is not really that different to young players asking about fitting battleships in the New Players Q&A section. At least, in that forum there's a bit more of an obligation to be polite, but come here and you're on your own - doubly so if you start asking about capitals ).
Quote: Try asking how to make boosters or any other hi level activities, guarantee the same response.
That's a little different - booster production is very lucrative precisely because not many people know how to do it, and those that do found out the knowledge for themselves through hard work/connections/whatever. If these things became easily accessible public knowledge, those who know now would lose a massive advantage. It's not really that different to asking "hey, can you guys give me 100m ISK a week out of your earnings indefinitely because I took the trouble to type a couple of sentences?", and is likely to be met with a similar level of distaste from those who are in the know.
Knowledge is power, and while many may deem to share (especially the commonly-known stuff), don't be surprised when others don't.

Edited by: Contralto on 06/02/2010 19:44:53 Got to agree with both your points there, but putting up a wall and giving negative one liners isn't the answer.
Many inexperienced players ask questions about advanced subjects to get a feel for whether its even worth starting to skill for something. Give them the basic facts and let them research from there.
I recently posted some info on a "guarded secret" and had someone mail me a request to tell them how to do it, I gave him some of my links, told him to go away, read up on it, practice then come back if he had any more questions. Not a "if you don't know now I'm not telling you" response.
Also how many people of the small percentage that read the forums will actually go out and set up a WH or 0.0 Pos and start manufacturing Boosters? not enough to impact the market I will bet. May even advertise the fact that Boosters actually exist and can be bought and used in hi sec.

Also good points.
From my point of view, it's the attitude of the question that's important as opposed to the actual content. That's true on the EVE forums, on other websites, and in real life. If someone shows that they're making an effort to find things out for themselves, have come across a bit of a wall and want some advice on how to continue I'm happy to give them pointers. If they just want me to give them to solution now, I'm not inclined to do so. Even if it's the same actual question; http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html, basically.
Others may perceive this differently, but I don't think it's out of line to highlight the rudeness of expecting someone else to do all your work for you. And there's worth in doing so, because the asker may not have thought about it from that perspective and may end up asking some good questions given the motivation.

Nothing wrong with asking such questions in principle (caps are dirt cheap these days) and i dont think you shouldnt ask questions about such things on forums. However something to show that topic starters arent just lazy but also did some research themselves would be nice, like showing what you want to use and asking if it is any good and how to improve it.

Dumb replies in this thread. You can have all the knowledge on carriers and have a good grasp of game mechanics. You can have done lvl 4's in your <insert ship> for years but if you don't know what to expect in lvl 5's you won't know how much tank you'll need and how much of a pain the neut towers will be, so when it comes to lvl 5's at least you'll be a newbie like everyone else who has a look at them the first time.
Elitist ret@rd replies just show how dumb you are.

I see responses like that as benevolent because they're doing their best to push a newbie (at least in the sense that they don't know much about what they're about to tempt) away from a bad idea.
In short: Your carrier fit isn't nearly as important as the fact that you better have at least a few people with you in a support gang, and then you're still running the risk of getting blobbed for a carrier kill. Translation: Carriers can't really solo level 5s. HACs even do it better, at least they can get outta dodge when local blooms. "PvE pwnboat" just isn't a carrier role.

Why do replys like mine make me look like a ******ed person? It's like if someone is asking how to tune his Ferrari but he can't even make the drivers license test on his own. People should use their brain more often and stop asking in the forums for any tiny bit of information instead of thinking on their own. That has nothing to do with elitism or something like that.

What if that person used his carrier in pvp only (like what they're created for) and never did a lvl 5 mission, what if he doesn't know how much to tank for or how much the neut towers hurt your cap? It's not like lvl 5 missions is some basic/comon gameplay in EVE.
Stop being a useless tool and either answer the legitimate questions people have or just stay away.

Blablabla.
Carrier takes 6 months to train for, and over 1 bil isk to buy and fit. That means that someone who has one, should have a rough idea about how the game works and some experience with the smaller ship classes. If it's too much work to google/eve-search the ship or check kb's for fits, why should we be helpful?

Edited by: Contralto on 07/02/2010 20:05:34 There is nothing special about a Carrier! Its just a boosted Domi, costs less than a Marauder or pirate BS and certainly less to fit, can be manufactured a lot easier as well. They are owned by everyone and there uncle nowadays, reserve the Superiority complexes for the Super Caps which still maintain there aura of leetness. Not many noobish "how to fit my Titan or mom/SC" threads out there.
And wouldn't it be ironic if a thread with information on Carriers just happened to pop up in the Google results!

Think I will try it as a cool story, bro!
I want to do level 5 missions and decide to do them in a carrier (for whatever reason).
Day 1.
I think, hmm, how much tank and neuting am I going to face... Let's google for "eve" and "missions". Suprise! I found a site that tells me how much ships and neuting towers are in each mission. Cool, now I can go to EFT and fit a Carrier to counter these 2 factors.
Day 2.
Cool, now my Carrier is tanky and cappy enough but I want to do more damage to speed things up. Lets fit some DCUs for more drones. Cool story, now I got my fit ready and it didn't even give me a headache and the even better thing is I didn't need to bother everyone on the forums because I used my brain! Feels good...

Cool story, huh?
