Deciding to attempt to realize an idea I've had for quite some time, I would like to present the EVE community with:
New Eden Gladiators
What is it? It's a game show and it's an opportunity for gambling. Basically, two warriors going at it until one explodes while you watch and gamble.
How does it work? The gladiators join a corporation specifically set up for this purpose. At a specified date and time, in a specified location, they fight each other. At the moment of listing of the matches, betting commences. The matches can be watched live on the location, or later on youtube. A channel will be set up for this expressed purpose.
I want to be a Gladiator! Great, you are welcome. You need to apply to the corp New Eden Gladiators [NEGLA] which is run by my alt Mia Danang. You need to join up at least 24 hours before the event, in order to insure your participation as much as possible. You will be expected to provide your own ship for the event, at least until the ball gets rolling. Payment is based on a percentage of the take, as explained below.
I want to bet! Great, you are welcome as well. As stated above, betting will commence at the time the matches are listed (will be listed here on these forums). Current odds will be presented at regular intervals. 15 minutes before the match, betting closes and final odds are presented. After each match, you can collect your winnings from the betting officer (name posted before event). Minimum bet is 1 million isk. There is no maximum bet.
The odds? So, how are the odds calculated? Fairly simple, actually. The amount of betting on each Gladiator will determine the odds for that Gladiator. For example, let's say 15 people bets 1 million each on Gladiator A. The other Gladiators get a combined betting pool of 55 million. That means that the total betting pool is 70 million. The Take (i.e, the amount of isk the House deducts to insure payment of Gladiators etc, normally 14%) is deducted, which means there's 60,2 million left in the betting pool. The odds for Gladiator A is then calculated as [Isk bet on A / Total isk i betting pool] = 0,214285714, or in fractions, 75/301, meaning that for every 75 isk put in, you get 301 isk back.
How do I place a bet? When betting commences, a bet is placed by transferring the amount of Isk you want to bet to the wallet of Mia Danang, the CEO of New Eden Gladiators. With your isk, you also send an Eve-mail with the details of your bet, i.e, "1 million isk on Gladiator C". Do not clutter the Eve-mail with other stuff. Keep it simple, or mistakes might happen and you could lose your bet.
Security? So, how do you know this isn't an elaborate scam? Well, you don't quite frankly. However, the risk for each better is quite small, and I stand to make more isk if the game show grows, so it would be stupid to destroy my reputation and a cash cow in a cash grab operation.
When? Now I would like to hear your views. I also want to reach out to any would-be Gladiators out there. If you are interested in becoming a Gladiator, let me know here so that I know there's an interest. Rules for the first match will come at a later time in this thread. Suffice to say, it will be limited to frigate combat. Once I have enough Gladiators, I will list the time and place for the matches, and betting will commence.
So, come one, come all. Have a combat alt? Wanting to get in on some organized combat? Sign up today! You might even make a profit from it!

Edited by: Evyx Cervin on 07/02/2010 04:28:16 I support this product and/or service and bid you well.
One would think that eve 'fight club'-type organizations would be all over the place but they never seem to last long. Lets hope this one does!
EDIT: Forcing players to leave their current corp and join yours specifically to fight in one event is a bad idea. You can get a much greater number of participants without this.

Yes, I know. However, having all participants in one corp makes sure that they don't drag in a bunch of wars, and that we don't have to rely on jetcan theft as an aggro method.
I'm going to see if it can be done with all participants in a corp, and if I don't get enough Gladiators, I'll see about opening it up.

Then we make use of CCPs "excellent" get-out-of-jail-free-card and jump corp
Seriously though, it might be a good idea to skip the whole "one corp" thing. If you're interested in being Gladiators but don't want to quit your corp, sign up anyway and we'll see how it goes.

Well, I'll give her the benefit of doubt and keep her on the list. Especially seeing as she's the only one there at the moment. ________________________________________ New Eden Gladiators - Do you have what it takes? |

Ki An is inactive, and I probably won't be reactivating him. Max is my main now. Very good memory, though. ________________________________________ New Eden Gladiators - Do you have what it takes? |

You are right, they won't, for two reasons:
1. If you drops caps on a pair of frigs, you're officially ******ed.
2. If you manage to drop caps in highsec, you are cheating. ________________________________________ New Eden Gladiators - Do you have what it takes? |

I like this concept, it seems similar to the old eve-arena which arranged ranked duels, but appears to have become a killboard since last I visited. Or the daily Flight Club which I ran for a while but didn't really pick up enough momentum to keep going.
So any information about rules and restrictions? I'd be interested in participating as a gladiator or maybe something more. You can go ahead and put me on the gladiator list for starters.

I really like this idea. Might I suggest teaming up with the folks at EVE Radio and making this a weekly radio show? That way it could be announced and narrated live. There's already a large listener base and they'd love to get in on a gig like this. It would make for some big betting pools!

The rules are quite loose at the moment. Suffice to say I'm aiming at strictly T1 frigs for the first game, to keep down costs and build some momentum. I'm thinking random knockout matches progressing up to a final pair.
You're welcome to help in any way you want, organization wise if you're interested. I'll put you up as a Gladiator in the mean time. ________________________________________ New Eden Gladiators - Do you have what it takes? |

Yes, I was thinking that myself, but I don't want to impose on their programming. If they are interested they are free to let me know. I don't want to spam them with requests as I'm sure they are busy as it is. ________________________________________ New Eden Gladiators - Do you have what it takes? |

I really like this idea, I think I could get into the gambling part. How would you handle the payouts? Would there be some automatic system, or would you manually do it yourself?

That's actually the biggest problem with this, as the gambling part requires trust, something that is hard to come by in Eve. The only way I could see it work is by handling it myself, taking the risk of being labeled a scammer before I even get a chance to prove anyone wrong. I'm hoping that the relative low risk for each better combined with me being as open as possible will give people the confidence to give it a go.
There's of course the possibility of bringing in someone well known and trusted. However, the undertaking for such a person would be quite substantial, and I'm not sure the small sums we're talking about would be interesting to someone like Chribba for instance.

Without having to read more of this topic except the word "bet" I have actually sketched some drafts of a "betting service" that would make use of the API (wallets/killmails/etc) and would pretty much be automatic in terms of making bets, bidding against/for etc. The only manual part would be the actual payout.
However it's at a very early stage so atm that service is of no use to you.
