I currently use wine 1.1.35 but I have this problem since many other wine versions. I start eve like this: env WINEPREFIX="/home/me/.wine_eve" wine explorer /desktop=0,1280x960 "C:\Programme\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
Very often I only see the splash screen which disappear after a few seconds and nothing else happens. I then execute the same command again and again and again. After several tries eve fire up normally and let me in.
I've no clue what's wrong with my machine. Some days this problem is very persevering (like today) - and on other days it works after the first try.
Any ideas??

Are you using Ubuntu 9.10? This is known behavior, exclusive to 9.10 I think.

Had this problem yesterday after "finally" upgrading 9.04 -> 9.10 After playing around with different versions of graphics drivers and wine and some other bits and bobs, what eventually made the splash screen crash go away was upgrading the kernel.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15737#c67 did the trick.
Quote: This advice is Ubuntu 9.10 specific.
It's definitely related to the kernel, I upgraded my kernel from the mainline verison here:-
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32/
dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.32-020632_2.6.32-020632_all.deb dpkg -i linux-headers-2.6.32-020632-generic_2.6.32-020632_amd64.deb dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.32-020632-generic_2.6.32-020632_amd64.deb
And rebooted,
The first time I booted some of the panel applets failed to load, but I selected "do not remove", and after a second attempt they were all ok.
Eve now works.
It screwed up Virtualbox, and I had to un-install 3.0.8 from synaptic and use 3.1 from Virtualbox' site, but other than that, no problems so far.

I have this problem at times. You should try to run the eve client from terminal and see what the output is. Also, if one instance of eve didnt shut down correctly the last time you played, you might have problems opening a new instance.
ps aux|grep C |grep eve and kill the pid for that process and try again.

I also have this problem. I am running openSUSE 11.2 using KDE and I have system monitor running at the same time. I sometimes end up with several instances of Exefile.exe showing before I actually get to the login screen. And then on top of that sometimes EVE locks up after selecting character.
