Another poster that wasn't around when the Classic client was axed for good...
However, I do admit, this is slightly different than what happened then, given that CCP has already admitted that the Incarna client runs poorly and could use some performance tweaks, i.e. anyone with half a fart in their head would be better to not run the game client on systems that they know cannot handle the current iteration of the client, or ya know... be prepared to smoke their systems, which will be their fault.

My laptop can run EVE just fine, but the heat it generates post-Incarna is definitely higher and the log-in part of the client is just absurd if you ask me. Getting you PC this hot just to run a damn animation is ridiculous. |

Is a troll someone that tells you that you've got a problem with your laptop? Is a troll someone that tells you that "heavy PC gaming" shouldn't be done on a portable machine with a 1 1/2" fan? Is a troll someone that tells you that you should never leave a laptop on all day anyway, Eve or otherwise? Is a troll someone that tells you that if leave your machine on all day doing nothing you are causing environmental damage
(I made up the last one. woot. +1).
Yep. We're trolls.

When leaving notebooks idle, (idle login-screen counts as idle too) windows-stuff kicks in, (for example: defragmentation) and the fan goes way up.
so, that pretty much sums up to A LOT OF HEAT !
had this with every notebook for years now, so yours is no exception.
And this has nothing to do with the CQ, so why bother even bringing it in ? O_o
edit: removed the useless insults. I disagree... if I leave my laptop open all night for example (No EVE client open) there is no heat in the morning. Plus I got no defragmentation going on. I know my pc man, I know if there are any backgorund stuff going on. The only reasonable explanation is the EVE client going crazy on my graphix card. @ trolls My laptop is designed for heavy PC gaming mind you, not the average integrated Intel GPU that runs solitaire. Leaving your laptop on a login screen while you're at work is not gameplay.

Again, the obvious solution is to not run your client on a system you know cannot handle it currently.
It sucks, and I do imagine it is pretty disappointing, but it wouldn't be the first time a game developer overshoots the performance requirements for their client in such a way that causes clients undo issues and complications.
I had to stop using my own laptop when they axed the Classic client because all I could really do with the Premium client was sit in station with the settings at their absolute lowest, which was kind of useless except for chatting and trading of course.
This situation is a work in progress, i.e. until CCP actually releases any content patches aimed at reducing performance problems for low end user rigs like laptops, etc. you have two options, continue to play the client on your laptop and hope it survives, or put it down and stick to a desktop until CCP makes good on their promise to look into the problem. ...clearly the Ishukone Watch Scorpion is the fifth horseman of the Apocalypse, i.e. the Brown Rider, otherwise known as Poopie. |

both people are right in this thread.
Laptops shouldn't be left on all day using gpu heavy programs, they do get hot hurr durr. @op try idling in another game all day and see if your laptop doesnt get hot. The opening screen does have a rather fancy animation.
but
everyone knows that there are problems with Incarna's performance, even CCP have admitted it. Cards working way too hard for the environment needed. |

A quite useless animation that takes way too much GPU for its purpose. I will not leave my laptop open with EVE log-in page from now on, but I would honestly appreciate an option to disable such animations to the a log-in page. I do not need it, the cost is simply to high for the gains, just like Incarna... |

Really...... if you had any idea how computers process 3D and the limitations of a computer to process only the amount it is capable of you, would be blaming the manufacture of the laptop not the company that makes a game.
The problem is the laptop can only process so much to the limitations of its hardware the heat you feel is actually the manufacturer putting something with no under clock in it to stop burning a hole in your desk.

the real question is why would you want to idle on login page? when you come back to the computer after a while dont you get the "socket closed" error first time logging in? wouldn't it be quicker to load it from scratch?
also get a notebook cooler, they are heaps better than they used to be. I did a heap of research and ended up getting a coolermaster single 230mm fan version. for me it dropped gpu temps by about 15 degrees over just wedging the back of the laptop up. also keeps the the surface of the lappy alot cooler (mine gets warm around the touchpad after a couple hours)

thats what I got was like 25 bucks or something from local pc outlet. |

Then why do other games, more demanding than an EVE log-in screen run just fine? Why do I have this issue JUST with EVE Online? Is my laptop to be blamed? And when I say other games I mean Deus Ex 3 and other current games on the market. |

Err. that linked pointed to issues with CQ which CCP and everyone else acknowledges/agrees was an issue.
You are complaining about a LOG-IN screen. If your laptop cannot run a single page animation and it's a "HEAVY GAMING" laptop (an oxymoron nonetheless) then the issue is NOT CCP.
Which part aren't you getting?
But I am a solutions person so I am going to suggest you take the lappy out to the garage and crank up the compressor. If that's not possible, a can of compressed air available from most good electronics shops should do the trick.
Failing that. Buy a HEAVY GAMING PC and use the laptop for forum posting. It's pretty darn good at doing that.

Meh, there is no option to disable that useless animation. Thanks for your time and input, but this wont fix the heating problem. My laptop runs EVE just fine, it heats up though. My surprise was to see that the log-in page made my laptop this hot. Honestly I feel that is just a useless "feature" just like Incarna.

Hey as an aside on this.
My wife's laptop turned itself off the other night. Vent was blocked, it overheated and shut down.
Isn't this feature enabled on your laptop?
If not. Fix it. (RTFM)
If so, then your laptop was not overheating and therefore this topic is null and void.

I like your logic. :D
I would say overheating happens when touching your laptop becomes a nuisance due to heat., not when it shuts down. |

The log-in page uses very roughly the same amount of hardware resources as being logged in and in space in a safespot. If you have trouble with the log in screen, you should have the same problems with the "in space" part too. Oh, and the "in space" part actually runs smoother in Incarna than before it. It's the CQ part that's uber-stressful to hardware. You might want to consider ramping down your graphics options OR cleaning your laptop's insides OR getting supplemental cooling. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Contributor_name:Akita_T#Contributions_link_collection |
