I under stand how to set them to aggressive and such but I have heard people mention setting their drones to assist a fleet member but I can't remember seeing that option in the drone management options, am I just that blind? ... |

1. Select the drones you want to use to assist/guard a fleet member. 2. Right click on drones. 3. You should have the options to assist or guard on drop down menu. 4. Select the option you want and it should give you a chose of fleet member.
I know that drones in guard mode will protect the selected member when they are attacked. I'm not so sure what assist does. Also, I believe the drones will be able to operate outside your control range.
Surrender is still your slightly less painful option. |

In the drone window, expand so you can see your drones in space. (it's usually best if you have them all in a drone group, but not essential). Select the drone, drones or drone group you want and then right click. Select 'Assist' from the menu and choose your fleet mate. You must be in a fleet for this to work.
Other options are 'engage', 'guard', 'return to drone bay' 'return and orbit', etc. The only one that needs explaination is 'guard'. This means that the drones will attack anything that attacks the vessel being guarded. It's slightly different to 'assist' which means the drones will attack whatever the assisted ship attacks. ______________________ Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University. |

Yes, just to confirm what Baka said:
Guard to protect Assist to help in the attack
If you set them to Guard - they will stay with you until the guy they are guarding is attacked and only then go off to help him ... which is lame.
If you set them to Assist they will leave immediately and then attack what he attacks.
What would be better was a "Support" category - which they do NOT have - that would have the drones go join that ship, Guard it from attack and Assist it's attacks. But ... they've just got this lame two part thing where you have to control what it is they are doing, switching from Guard to Assist as that other ships actions change.
*shrug*
One thing I've done with Assist - was to use it to replace lost drones in one ship with extra drones from another.
Say I've got an Arbitrator with a drone bay just chock full of drones and a Caracal that's just lost one of it's two.
1) I launch the drone I am going to give to the Caracal. 2) I tell the drone to Assist the Caracal 3) I then Abandon the drone when it gets there. 4) The Caracal then Scoops the Abandoned Drone to it's Drone bay and is back at it's full complement.
Since I carry a remote armor repairer on my Arbitrator specifically to fix drones, if the other drone that Caracal had has armor damage, I can use this procedure both ways to swap drones between the ships so that the Arbitrator can fix the damaged drones armor.
A variation on that - is for the ship with the damaged drone to tell it's damaged drone to Assist the Drone Repair ship - so that it will fly over there - where it is repaired - and then told to return.
Of course ... all that works a lot better if both players have done it before or the same person is commanding both ships. This is also more of a PVE tactic for use in the lull between acceleration gates or when ABing away from the rats for a bit of a break. You could do this in a PVP fight but ... the distraction might not be worth the trouble unless both parties were really good at it.
